Mumbai: Decomposed body of woman found stuffed in two bags

A few days after the high-profile double murder of artist Hema Upadhyay and her lawyer Harish Bhambhani, the Deonar Police found the mutilated remains of a middle-aged female, stuffed in two travelling bags, in the creek near Indian Oil Nagar in Mankhurd.

Found on Tuesday, the decomposed remains — said to of a woman between 30 and 40 years of age — have mystified police officials, as tracing her identity and family seems an impossible task as of now. Forensic experts said her death was possibly due to the massive throat injury on the body.

However, the viscera and DNA samples of the woman have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory in Kalina. Forensic experts said that the cause of death would be revealed by the lab report.

Unrecognisable
Experts added that since the body had been in the water for 2-5 days, it had bloated beyond recognition. “We have procured the hair, tooth and bones for DNA sampling, which can play a major role in identifying the woman, if any claimants come forward,” said a forensic expert.

He added that the woman is probably married since the post-mortem showed signs of childbirth. “We have had no success until now, but are looking for a missing woman matching this description — with a silver ring in her right hand, and hair in braids on one side and beads on the other,” said Senior Police Inspector Dhanraj Gaikwad from the Deonar police station.
