Mumbai Diary: Friday frolics

Beer for beard?
We think our readers deserve to see some of the most hilarious emails we receive. Here’s a recent one that was part of a promotional offer from a popular restaurant in the city.

It read “World Beard Day is celebrated annually, with people from every nation and continent gathering together with their beards. It is held on the first Saturday of September and is characterised by the happiness of all people being with their beards and with each other.

On World Beard Day, it is customary for the bearded members of a family to relax and partake in no jobs or chores. The restaurant will be serving beer throughout the night at Rs 100 only to all those who are bearded! You don’t have to understand it.

You just have to have it! Shaving on World Beard Day is universally considered to be highly disrespectful, so wait till Sunday to do the needful.” Need we say more?

Flying off shelves!
Ordering books is set to become as quick as ordering lunch from your neighbourhood Chinese eatery. Local delivery service (they also call themselves local discovery service), Scootsy has partnered with India Book Distributors (IBD) to deliver books in the city in 60 minutes.

Currently, this time duration guarantee is for deliveries between Cuffe Parade and Juhu. They will be adding more locations soon. The app is available on iOS and Android and can be downloaded from www.scootsy.com. You can also call them on 20002222.

From Aakash Chopra’s pen
Three books in six years! That’s not a bad strike rate for erstwhile India Test batsman Aakash Chopra whose book The Insider — Decoding the Craft of Cricket will be released at the Cricket Club of India this evening while Rahul Dravid and Ajinkya Rahane indulge in some willow talk.

The book is a compilation of Chopra’s pieces for Cricinfo. Chopra, a columnist with this newspaper as well, wrote Beyond the Blues: A First-Class Season Like No Other (2007–08) and Out of the Blue, a book on Rajasthan’s Ranji Trophy triumph.

Published by HarperCollins, this one will should don the shelves of cricketers and enthusiasts. In one of his pieces — on preparation, Chopra writes about how differently his India teammates prepared for a game.

He recalls Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag missing a practice session before the 2003 India vs watching a movie instead. And they didn’t fare too badly. Sehwag had identical scores of 47 in both innings while Dravid scored an epic 233 followed by 72 not out.

In The Art of Captaincy chapter, the former Test opener writes about how he would stretch “that extra bit” if his captain stood by him. “But I am not sure — like I personally wasn’t with Brendon McCullum for Kolkata Knight Riders in the second season of the IPL — I’d hold myself back.

Why would a player do anything for a captain who doesn’t even remember his name? Pietersen apparently forgot the names of his Royal Challengers teammates. No wonder things changed when Kumble took over.”

Kudos for Ketan Mehta
Ketan Mehta, one of Indian cinema’s most prolific and renowned filmmakers, has joined the India Film Project 2015 as a jury member.

The project which is Asia’s largest film making festival will be held in Ahmedabad from September 18-26 this year and is expecting a participation of 15,000 filmmakers across 20 countries. In the last four years, more than 21,000 filmmakers have been a part of this festival and made 1,500 films.

“I’m delighted to be a part of the jury at IFP. It will be a great experience to judge upcoming talent. I think the concept is unique and I look forward to see the great work done by all the passionate movie makers in just 50 hours,” Mehta says.
