The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce

Mumbai Diary page: Wednesday Whispers

Stunts move with the crowds
Where ever the crowd is, there they will be this seems to be the mantra of this group of daredevil performers. Recently, we featured them performing while devotees headed to worship Lalbaugcha Raja, and now they have been spotted near Mount Mary Steps in Bandra.

A large crowd had gathered to see this little girl walk the rope with pots on her head. She also did cartwheels on the rope, and walked on it with a stick balanced on her nose. A man who claimed to be her father collected money from the awestruck onlookers.

The danger of the stunts is enormous as the rope is tied a good six feet above the ground with the little girl having to put in a lot of concentration to successfully complete them. The heat and humidity yesterday did not help her cause as she was seen sweating profusely as she performed. Looks like wherever the crowds go, these performers will follow!

Sizzling at Somaiya
Readers may have chuckled with us at the collective sighing over Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan’s good looks. We have to admit that he does cut a fine figure, although it’s figures of a different kind that he is responsible for we mean financial ones, of course. Yesterday, Rajan may have sent a few more hearts aflutter when he attended Somaiya Vidyavihar’s foundation day celebrations as chief guest.

While the RBI Guv went through the usual speechifying and other formalities, we can’t help wondering never mind the Sensex, how high did the temperatures rise in Ghatkopar, where the college is located? And that led us to think, maybe the suburb should have been renamed, just for the duration of the function, “Hotkopar”...

The best policy
Compared with other cities in our great big country, Mumbai is probably one of the places where the prevalence of hawk eyes means that you are less likely to be fleeced. For instance, this diarist was travelling to CST in a Harbour Line train when a young boy passed by selling safety pins. After asking the price, the diarist absent-mindedly gave him Rs 20 for a dozen pins far more than the cost.

The boy must have been barely 10, and he took the money. Then he sat on an adjacent bench, thinking… and then came up and returned the remaining amount, saying he had been paid too much. He could well have pocketed the extra, and while Rs 10 may be nothing for many of us, it does mean something to a kid selling stuff on the train. But he chose to return it, and we can only stand back in admiration for his honesty.

And we wish that this attitude permeates to the higher echelons of our society where, as the amounts grow, so does the scope of the chicanery. At least this little guy has something the big guns may not the ability to earn his living, holding his head high.
