After builder Jinesh Jain (30) was gunned down by two unidentified assailants in burkhas in his Chunabhatti office on Friday, the police are looking for suspected hitman Sumit Yerunkar or Pappu, who may have taken his supari from a rival builder. In their zeal to apprehend Pappu (36), several plainclothes cops from the Crime Branch are posted outside his house in MHADA Colony, Sion.

On Friday evening, the two burkha-clad hitmen entered Everard Nagar in Chunabhatti, asked for Jain and then shot him twice. The local police and Crime Branch are conducting parallel investigations. The police are looking for the white Alto in which the accused had arrived and then sped away. The car was last seen heading towards the highway out of Mumbai. “Getting the car is very important as it will give several leads in the case,” said a cop.

Meanwhile, the Crime Branch suspects a business rivalry may have been behind the shooting. An officer said, “On the morning of the incident, Jain had a heated argument with a rival builder over an SRA project in Chembur. We are questioning the same builder and two other builders in the matter.”

“Currently, we are focusing on the business rivalry angle. We suspect the role of Sumit Yerunkar alias Pappu. He is a history-sheeter; there are two robbery cases, three arms cases and two murder cases against him. He is a convicted accused and was out on parole. We suspect the mastermind gave him supari to execute the firing,” said another officer.
