The BMC entrusted the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC) to re-construct dilapidated British-era road overbridges in Mumbai and the suburbs. Considering the tremendous road traffic, in most cases, MRIDC has planned the new cable-stayed bridges adjacent to the existing ones. Old bridges will be demolished later. A detailed plan has been made in such a way that it causes almost no hindrance even to pedestrian movement, officials had stated earlier
The construction of these cable-stayed overbridges has already started at Reay Road, Byculla and Dadar. Plans are to complete these in less than two years, officials said
The cable-stayed bridge in Byculla spans 916 metres in length and will rise to a height of 9.7 metres
The first stage work comprised the construction of a bridge parallel to the existing one while in the second stage, the existing bridge will be reconstructed at the same location
Meanwhile, the cable-stayed bridge at Reay Road will be inaugurated this year, making it the first such structure in Mumbai suburbs to open for traffic
The Reay Road cable-stayed bridge passes over the Eastern Freeway. It has been designed with architectural LED lighting and will enhance the aesthetic appeal of the area
At Dadar, the cable-stayed bridge is being built parallel to the existing one, which is open to traffic
The Ghatkopar cable-stayed bridge will replace the existing bridge connecting LBS Road with the Eastern Express Highway, intersect Mumbai Metro Green Line-4 in the east and the underground National High-Speed Rail Project Corridor alignment of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet train project corridor, making it a complex engineering feat
