BJP's hatred towards elected CM: says AAP on PWD's takes back offer to CM's home

AAP spokesperson Priyanka Kakkar on Wednesday targeted the BJP after the Public Works Department (PWD) withdrew the offer to Delhi CM Atishi to provide bungalow number 6, Flagstaff Road, Civil Lines as she "did not occupy the property within the required time frame," ANI reported. "Atishi is being removed from the residence for the second time in three months - it shows their (BJP) hatred towards women and an elected Chief Minister," Kakkar told ANI. "BJP has no issue and hence they just want to create hurdles for us," she added. She also alleged that the BSP and AIMIM are contesting as the BJP's 'B teams in the upcoming Delhi assembly elections, ANI reported. "I think that in Delhi - the election is between BJP and AAP. BJP will do every negative politics to win - they will distribute cash, will bring their 'B teams' - that's the reason BSP and AIMIM are contesting in Delhi," she said. Elections for the 70-member Delhi assembly are scheduled to be held on February 5, in a single phase, the Election Commission announced on Tuesday. The vote counting will take place on February 8, ANI reported. AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday came in to support CM Atishi amid a row on the CM's official residence, claiming that the BJP is losing the Delhi elections and that is why they have restored to such "dirty politics", ANI cited. In a post on X, Kejriwal said, "Within three months, BJP again expelled Chief Minister Atishi ji from the Chief Minister's residence. These people are showing their frustration by abusing Atishi ji and throwing her out of the house. BJP is losing the Delhi elections badly and hence these people have resorted to such dirty politics." Earlier, while addressing a press conference, Atishi claimed that the Centre had "thrown" her out of the CM's residence for the second time in three months. "Today, the dates for the upcoming assembly elections have been announced...The BJP-led central government has thrown me out of the Chief Minister's residence for the second time in three months...The BJP thinks that they will stop us from working by snatching our houses, abusing us and speaking ill about my family. They can snatch our houses, and stop our work but cannot stop our passion for working for the people of Delhi," she said. The PWD stated that Atishi did not take physical possession of 6-Flagstaff Road (CM residence) despite multiple requests, ANI cited. In the letter, the PWD further said that they had made the offer of two new residences to the Delhi CM, one at Raj Niwas Lane and the other at Daryaganj. (With ANI inputs)

Delhi wakes up to dense fog amid sharp drop in temperature

Dense fog enveloped Delhi with visibility dropping to zero early Wednesday, as the minimum temperature dropped sharply to 7.4 degrees Celsius, the weather office said. "Palam's visibility dropped to 50 metres at 12 midnight. It improved to 500 metres by 2.30 am, before dropping to zero at 5.30 am. Winds remained westerly at 5-7 kmph throughout the night," the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The minimum temperature in Delhi dropped to 7.4 degrees Celsius, 0.5 notch above normal, from 10.5 degrees Celsius on Tuesday, according to the IMD. The maximum temperature in Delhi is expected to settle around 16 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, the weather office said. The capital's Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 334 at 9 am, dropping to the 'very poor' category from the 'poor' AQI recorded on Tuesday, Central Pollution Control Board data showed. An AQI between zero and 50 is considered 'good', 51 and 100 'satisfactory', 101 and 200 'moderate', 201 and 300 'poor', 301 and 400 'very poor', and 401 and 500 'severe'. Visuals from the Sarai Kale Khan area, Ram Leela Maidan area and Nigam Bodh Ghat area showed a significant number of people taking refuge at night homes with all their beds occupied. The Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board (DUSIB) has also set up 235 pagoda tents to provide shelter to homeless people. Night shelters have been set up in several areas of the national capital, including AIIMS, Lodhi Road, and Nizamuddin flyover. To battle this chilly weather, residents of the capital were seen gathering around bonfires as temperatures continued to drop. On Sunday, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) revoked the Stage-III actions under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi-NCR following a significant improvement in the air quality index (AQI). Stage-I and Stage-II measures, however, will remain in effect, officials said on Sunday. The dense fog, chilly winds, and dropping temperatures are expected to continue for the next few days, with residents advised to stay warm and minimize outdoor activities, especially during the early morning and evening hours. Necessary medical arrangements being made to tackle HMPV: Pune Collector

Amid detection of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) cases in parts of the country, the Pune district administration in Maharashtra on Tuesday said necessary arrangements were being made to tackle the infection. However, it also assured citizens that there was nothing to be concerned about, news agency PTI reported. HMPV is one of the many respiratory viruses that can cause infections in people of all ages, particularly during the winter and early spring months. The infection is usually mild and self-limiting, and most patients recover on their own. India reported its first HMPV cases on Monday after five children tested positive in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, and Gujarat. On Tuesday, two suspected cases of the virus were reported from Maharashtra's Nagpur. Pune district collector Jitendra Dudi said, "We are going to hold meetings with medical and revenue officials. Necessary arrangements and SOPs received from the government will be put in place. However, I would like to tell everyone that there is nothing to be alarmed about." The district administration has taken necessary precautions in terms of medical preparedness. So if any case is reported, the patient can be treated as early as possible, he said. Asked about the health facilities in government hospitals in the district, the collector said that after the Covid-19 pandemic, the medical facilities in the district are already in place, be it from primary to tertiary health care. "We have become very robust in terms of health infrastructure. We are very well-prepared," he said.  HMPV outbreak: States asked to ramp up surveillance for respiratory diseases The Centre has advised states to step up surveillance for respiratory illnesses and spread awareness about the prevention of transmission of HMPV. Union Health Secretary Punya Salila Srivastava on Monday chaired a virtual meeting with states and Union Territories to take stock of respiratory illnesses and HMPV cases in the country and public health measures for their management, a health ministry statement said. The meeting was held amid reports of a surge in HMPV cases in China and on a day when India reported five cases, PTI reported. During the meeting, it was reiterated that the data from Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) of the health ministry does not indicate any unusual rise in influenza-like illness (ILI) and severe acute respiratory illnesses (SARI) cases anywhere in the country, the statement said. Srivastava emphasised that there is no cause for concern for the public as HMPV has been present globally since 2001, the statement said. She advised states to strengthen and review the ILI/SARI surveillance. (With PTI inputs)

Draft Digital Data Protection Rules prioritises citizen-centric governance: PM

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has stated that the Draft Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025, prioritises India's commitment to citizen-centric governance. Responding to the post by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Modi wrote, "Union Minister, @AshwiniVaishnaw explains how the Draft Digital Personal Data Protection Rules, 2025, prioritises India's commitment to citizen-centric governance. The rules aim to safeguard personal data while driving growth and inclusivity." On January 5, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) on Sunday elaborated on the draft Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Rules, designed to protect citizens' rights under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023. The Ministry announced that public feedback on the draft rules would be open until February 18, 2025, through the MyGov portal. The DPDP Act and the draft rules are structured to keep pace with the rapid advancements in digital technologies, it added. The Data Protection Board, envisioned as a fully digital entity, will enable citizens to lodge complaints and resolve disputes online without the need for physical presence. The rules also aim to educate citizens about their rights and empower them to manage their personal data via multilingual digital platforms. In addition to online feedback, the Ministry plans structured consultations with civil society, industry, and government stakeholders to refine the rules. The finalised rules will then be submitted to Parliament for approval. The draft rules aim to protect individual rights without causing disruptions to existing digital practices. Organizations will be given adequate time to comply with the new regulations, with minimal compliance burdens. Data processing based on prior consent will be allowed to continue, with notices issued to individuals, ensuring their rights under the law are upheld. To safeguard children's personal data, Data Fiduciaries will be required to implement measures to obtain verifiable parental consent. Additionally, startups will benefit from reduced compliance requirements, while significant Data Fiduciaries will be subject to stricter obligations. The DPDP Act introduces graded financial penalties based on the severity and duration of violations. Businesses may voluntarily submit undertakings to the Data Protection Board to avoid penalties during proceedings, ensuring fair and proportional enforcement. The draft rules do not impose a blanket requirement for storing personal data within India. However, restrictions on cross-border data transfers may apply to specific categories of personal data as recommended by a designated committee. By integrating digital-first mechanisms and maintaining a balanced regulatory framework, the draft DPDP Rules aim to secure the rights of citizens while ensuring India's digital economy continues to thrive. Delhi to vote in single phase on February 5, counting on February 8

Assembly polls in Delhi will be held on February 5 and the votes counted on February 8, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar announced on Tuesday. The last date to file nominations is January 17 and the scrutiny of nominations will be done by January 18. Candidates will be able to withdraw their nominations till January 20. “It is a single-phase election. We have deliberately kept polling on a Wednesday so more people come out to vote, like we did in Maharashtra,” Kumar said. ‘Politics of work and abuse’ AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal on Tuesday said the Delhi Assembly polls will be a contest between the “politics of work and politics of abuse”, asserting that his party will form the government in the national capital. “This election will be between the politics of work and the politics of abuse. The people of Delhi will have faith in our politics of work. We will definitely win,” Kejriwal said. Kejriwal and AAP leaders have been accusing the BJP of hurling abuses and trying to win the elections without having any chief ministerial candidate and issues. Kejriwal also released the party’s campaign song for the Assembly polls. “Phir Layenge Kejriwal”—the 3:29-minute song—highlights AAP’s achievements during its tenure in office and aims to strike a chord with voters, emphasising continuity in governance. Kejriwal said after releasing the song, “We celebrate our elections like festivals, and people wait for our song; now it’s out, and people can dance to it.” ‘Committed to development’ BJP president J P Nadda on Tuesday welcomed the announcement of the Delhi Assembly poll schedule and appealed to people to elect a government that will contribute to their progress and make the capital a developed city. Under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the party is committed to the overall development of Delhi with the resolve of ‘antyodaya’, the welfare of people at the bottom of the pyramid, Nadda said. “I urge the people of Delhi to choose a government that focuses on improving the standard of living, combating corruption, reducing pollution and providing quality services to make everyday life easier,” he said.
