Khatija Begum, the victim, resided with her three sons on the sixth floor at Aman Society in Khar (East). After her husband’s demise a year ago, Khatija was unwell for a long time, said her son in his police statement.
The incident came to light on Monday morning around 5 am when passersby noticed Khatija’s body on the ground in a pool of blood. She was rushed to VN Desai Hospital where she was declared dead. According to witnesses, she had fallen directly on the fuel tank of a bike, which was parked below her apartment.
But neighbours suspect foul play. One neighbour on the condition of anonymity said that it was difficult to believe she had jumped as she had trouble walking. Additionally, the apartment was registered in Khatija’s name and there were regular fights between her and her sons over the apartment.
However, family members claim that she committed suicide owing to her illness. API Rajkumar Hasbe of Nirmal Nagar police station said the woman had allegedly committed suicide. “The police will investigate the case from all angles and the statements from family and neighbours will be taken.”
