Heavy construction work near B-Block of Vasant Kunj is giving residents sleepless nights and health problems

For the Parameswarans, it was a dream house.
Five years ago, when they shifted to a duplex in B-Block of Vasant Kunj, they couldn't have asked for more. But soon, their dream abode proved to be nothing less than a nightmare.

Trouble spot: Padmini Parmeswaran pointing towards the construction
site at Vasant Kunj. She alleges the soot has triggered her asthma.

Round the clock construction near the Parameswaran's house has forced the family to shift to Gurgaon. Reason: allergy due to dust emanating from the construction work. And it's not only causing problems for them, but to other residents as well.

"I am an asthma patient and have been suffering for long.u00a0 The construction work has aggravated my breathing problem. Now I have to take steroids everyday. My husband and daughter are also under medication since December. The dust from the site suffocates us and we cannot even keep our windows open," said Padmini Parameswaran.

Not only Padmini, but other residents, too, have similar experiences to share.
Ayon Banerjee, another resident of the colony, is finding it difficult to live in the area as her 11-year-old daughter, who is also allergic to dust, has developed breathing problems.

"The dust is all over. We cannot sit in our living room without cleaning the furniture constantly. My school-going daughter is unwell, she has to visit the doctor every other day," Banerjee said.
Residents allege that more than 500 trees, which were part of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) ridge area, were razed for the construction.

"The area used to be all green, and wild animals and peacocks could be spotted here but, not any more. They have axed more than 500 trees for the construction," said M K Bajaj, another Vasant Kunj resident.
People are clueless as to who is carrying out the construction, whether it's a government agency or a private builder.

"We tried to find out about the people associated with the construction, but failed. There is not even a board installed on the site about the builder or the contractor," said Subhash Tomar, a resident.

However, the construction site manager did accept that locals have reported health problems. A man at the site, who claimed to be part of the project, said: "We have received complaints, and are trying not to work late in the night. We cannot do much to stop the dust coming out of the site. We are constructing a residential complex here. It'll be named Maharishi and the work is not at all illegal."
