Congress opposition leader M Nagaraj fumbles reading English words from a script written in Kannada while trying to reveal a park scam, laughs it off lateru00a0

When BBMP councillors gathered at the council meeting yesterday, Congress Opposition leader M Nagaraj, while trying to expose a park scam, sent the crowd into peals of laughter. Apparently, Nagaraj was unable to pronounce English words such as 'pergola' and 'gazebo' that were written in Kannada script.

In an attempt to cover up his gaffe Nagaraj laughed it off and joked, "What language is this? I can't even pronounce it." He added, "What do these words mean?"

Kannada is beautiful
Nagaraj spoke to MiD DAY and said, "They have put English words in Kannada. How can people understand that? There are such beautiful words to describe such things in Kannada." He added, "Who here knows fancy language like that?"

Too much spending

The embarrassed Opposition Leader went on to question why the BBMP have spent enormous amounts on beautifying parks. Nagaraj reported to the members that crores had been unnecessarily spent on park maintenance for the years 2007-2008 and 2010-2011.

Now that's a load of money!

The BBMP installed 2,030 dustbins each costing Rs 4,800. The bill for dustbins raked up to Rs 439.46 lakh.u00a0
**u00a0 A total of 343 Pergolas were installed in parks at an astonishing Rs 439.46 lakh. Each pergola set the BBMP back by Rs 1.5 lakh.u00a0
**u00a0 Arch's weren't cheap eitheru00a0-- a total of 117 were built and that cost the BBMP Rs 121 lakh.
**u00a0 Rs 2.2 lakh Gazebos were put up in 185 parks which cost Rs 547.5 lakh. Each Gazebo was bought at Rs 2.2 lakh.u00a0
** For each of the 5,209 benches, the BBMP shelled out Rs 442 lakh. Each bench costs Rs 8,500.


The Other Side

>>BBMP Commisioner H Siddaiah said, "It is not that we have only been updating these parks in the last three years. We have been doing it for much longer.
>>It's wrong to say that it has been going on only in the last three years." He added, "A committee will have to be set up consisting of engineers, horticulturists and members of the agriculture university to look into these allegations.
>>Once the final report is sent to me we will know how much has actually been spent."
