Frail health stops eighty-four-year-old leader from fulfilling vow to walk 600 steps to legendary Anjaneya temple on Anjanadri Hill
Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) International chief Ashok Singhal's vow to climb the 600-odd steps of the world-famous Hanuman temple atop the Anjanadri Hill remained unfulfilled yesterday.
Over 60 people, who were accompanying Singhal, stepped in to help the 84-year-old leader and took turns to carry him to the hilltop that is believed to be the birthplace of Lord Hanuman and also the spot where He met His master Lord Ram.

"Though he did manage to reach the hilltop, his desire to do so on his own remained unfulfilled," said a source present with the leader.

"He started on his own only to end up on a chair in a few minutes."
Singhal reportedly took visitors at the legendary temple by surprise after he suddenly surfaced with a cover of gun-toting commandoes in Hampi.
The leader, who, reportedly had a long-standing wish to pay his respects to Lord Hanuman, finally managed to pay his respects to the deity yesterday on the shoulders of his supporters.u00a0
"Everybody in the group supported Singhal during his ascent," said another source. "Though he did try to make it to the top on his own, he gave up after taking a few steps. He was too exhausted to continue."
Two members in the group tried to ensure the leader was in shade through the journey.u00a0 Even commandoes in his security cover took turns carrying the leader.

Ashok Singhal remained unavailable for comment despite repeated attempts by this reporter.
