Rightwing Hindutva groups are opposing the installation of Charlie Chaplin's statue at Udupi beach in Mangalore because "he was a Christian."

The idea to erect a 67-feet-high statue of the renowned comedian was mooted by Kannada film director Hemant Hegde for his upcoming movie, 'House Full'.

The groups have threatened to stop work on the statue being built at Otthinene in Udupi district.u00a0

Hegde said nearly 20 activists claiming to be affiliated to Hindu Jagran Vedike came to the site on Friday and stopped the work.

"When we told them that Chaplin was a great artiste, they said we may build a statue of Jesus Christ later," he explained.

He said that the protestors said they don't want to see Chaplin's face before entering Someshwar temple.

The protestors reportedly said they would demolish the statue even if it is built with the sanction from the authorities and asked them to build the statue of Swami Vivekananda instead.u00a0

Hegade is planning to organise a protest in Bangalore.
