JNU wants Poll buzz on 'silent' campus

Last Students' Union polls at varsity were held IN 2007

Two years are up and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students are eagerly waiting to experience the election fever on the campus again.

JNU president, Sandeep Singh said, "The JNUSU elections are unique and important for students. October used to be the busiest month, buzzing with public meetings, debates, and campaigns. We hope that varsity elections will be held as early as possible."

Students have kept their fingers crossed, as SC will hear plea seeking change in Lyngdoh panel on university polls on October 27.

In August last year hundreds of JNU students held a protest march in the national capital demanding lifting of Supreme Court's stay on the students' union elections in the varsity. In a memorandum submitted to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, they had expressed concern over the replacement of JNUSU Constitution as mentioned in the Lyngdoh Committee's recommendations.

Sneha Singh, a second year French language student said, "I have heard a lot about the JNU elections. I am waiting for a chance to experience it. I hope to witness at least one election during my stay at JNU."

"I have always been inclined towards politics. That's one reason why I got into JNU. Now that the SC has put its stay, we all are missing most of the fun associated with it," said Satish Gujral, a post graduate student.Last elections held in October 2007, was swept by CPI-ML supported All India Student Association (AISA) by winning the entire four central panel posts.
