Congress' Bagwe keeps away from city; denies he does not get along well with local cops
Six rape cases and a blast in the past five months made Home Minister R R Patil convene a meeting of MLAs and top police officials in the city yesterday, but Congress Minister of State for Home Ramesh Bagwe was conspicuous by his absence.
Bagwe had recently complained of inferior treatment at the hands of the police in the city, and claimed none of his suggestions on restoring police chowkies had been taken seriously.
While people close to Bagwe said he was unwell and was in Mumbai, leaders of the city unit of the Congress, including Deputy Mayor Prasanna Jagtap, met Patil and said suggestions made by Bagwe had not been implemented by the police.
Asked why Bagwe was absent for the meeting, Patil said, "No contact could be made with Bagwe. I will contact him when I reach Mumbai."
Busy with polls?
But MiD DAY could contact Bagwe, and he said, "I was busy overseeing elections in Navi Mumbai and Badlapur, so I was unable to attend the meeting that was convened in Pune." Bagwe rejected all reports of a discord between him and the police.
On the two cases of gang rape in the city in recent days one in Wakad and the other in Sangavi Patil said, "We will work towards ensuring such cases do not take place in future." Neelam Gorhe, Shiv Sena spokesperson, demanded in the meeting that a cab service should be started on the outskirts of the city. According to Gorhe, Patil asked the officer concerned to look into the matter.
