MiD DAY reporter recounts how despite being told clearly, a PCR operator couldn't pinpoint location of mob on rampage
It was nearly five in the evening and I was getting pretty anxious. We were headed to Humayun's tomb in Nizamuddin area and the entry into this protected monument was supposed to close at 5 pm.
I was on board HOHO (hop on, hop off) bus and the guide had just briefed us about the history of the monument. We were in the Nizamuddin area and the bus was moving very slowly because of the massive traffic.
Suddenly it stopped. A huge mob, comprising mostly youngsters, had gathered ahead and was pelting stones at a DTC bus. Behind us, the road was choc-a-block with traffic and the belligerent mob was gradually moving towards us. Our guide quickly got down to plead with the mob to spare the bus. By now the cars and buses behind us were turning back and our driver too started to move in reverse but by then the mob had surrounded us.u00a0 I made a frantic call to the police control room.
A woman picked up my call and I tried to explain the situation to her. "Kaha ho raha hai madam?" (Where is it happening?) she asked. "Jaha kal jhamela ho raha tha. Nizamuddin mein (where the trouble had erupted yesterday, the Nizamuddin area)," I explained. "Par road ka direction to batao (But at least tell me in which direction)," she said again.u00a0 By now the mob was leering at us (there were two other women in the bus). Just as our bus managed to turn around, a huge stone was hurled at it, smashing its rear glass. All the time there was no police to be seen anywhere.
My co-passenger, an American, had recovered from the initial shock that all had found ourselves in by now. "Had they reached the door, I don't know what I would have done," he said. "I put away my video camera just in time. That could have set them off further," he added but didn't forget to click pictures of the damage done when he was safely away.u00a0
