Businessman Charansingh Darasingh Rajput (35) was killed on the spot when a boulder rolled down the ghat and hit him near the Katraj tunnel, and the suspects are a troop of monkeys.
Monkeys have become a nuisance on the Katraj Ghat and are said to harass road travellers.
Witnesses said they could not be sure, but it looked like a bunch of monkeys had pushed the boulder down from the upper reaches of the ghat.
The incident took place around 4 pm when Rajput and Yashwant Bhimrao Kotekar were riding on a two-wheeler towards the city. Rajput, who was riding pillion, was fatally injured.
"As we passed the Katraj tunnel, my bike wobbled, and I realised something had fallen from above," said Kotekar. "I stopped 10 feet on and turned to see what had happened. I saw Rajput lying on the ground, bleeding profusely."
Kotekar said vendors who sell juice in the vicinity came rushing to his help. He said the vendors felt monkeys had rolled the boulder down the slope. Rajput was declared brought-dead at Sassoon Hospital. A case of accidental death was registered at the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station.
