The proposal of donating books to civic-run school libraries from corporators' fund was rejected in the PMC's General Body meeting
It seems that city’s elected corporators find reading of no use, and hence they rejected the proposal of donating books to school libraries from their yearly fund in the General Body (GB) meeting recently. The proposal, which was approved in the Standing Committee meeting, had to get a final consent in GB from at least one corporator. However, no councillor was ready to take out money from their funds to inculcate the habit of reading among students.

Every elected corporator gets Rs 20 lakh every year to carry out development work in his ward. The neats usually use to money to installation of streetlights, benches, and do other minor work. Most of the corporators use this fund for their own publicity as they ensure their name is engraved on the benches in bold letters.
Speaking to MiD DAY, a PMC official said that there was a bit of confusion among corporators. The councillors feel that such projects can only be implemented through MLA or MP fund. However it was clearly mentioned in the proposal books for economically deprived students or for civic schools can be purchased by using the corporators’ fund.
Vishal Tambe, chairman of the Standing Committee who had proposed the project, is being optimistic. “There have been instances where the GB has approved projects that weren’t within the confines of the PMC. But this project is very much within the civic body’s control, and I believe the project will get approved. I’ll resend this proposal in next GB meeting.” u00a0
