No one wants to operate MSRDC's trauma centre

While it has always been said that accidents on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway are mostly due to human error, an independent researcher, Tanmay Pendse, the need of the hour is an active trauma centre on the stretch.

Tanmay, who had lost his brother, Akshay, in an accident few years back on the road, stresses that the injured need to be given treatment within the golden hour.

The trauma centre constructed by MSRDC at Ozarde has been ready for over two years now but no one is coming forward to run it. MSRDC’s attempt to invite tenders for its maintenance and operation has not done much.

Speaking to mid-day, Pendse said, “Even though the case studies say that majority of the accidents have taken place because of human error, it is the job of the authorities to see to it that all the measures are in place to avoid more. More brifen safety ropes should be installed along the accident prone stretch and the trauma centre that has been set up by MSRDC, should start as soon as possible so that the injured can get treatment in the golden hour and lives can be saved.”

‘Few patients’
An MSRDC official said, “We have invited tenders for the appointment of a company that can run the trauma centre, but there has been no response because many companies feel that they will suffer financial loss because they will not get patients on a daily basis, and whatever patients they get will be from accidents on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway.

In the past six months, 145 accidents have taken place on the Expressway with more than 60 deaths. There are no facilities for air ambulances, to lift accident victims to the centre. The trauma centre was specially set up to provide treatment to accident victims on the 94-km Mumbai-Pune Expressway, where victims take either 45 minutes to reach a hospital or bleed to death on the road.

In October 2014 MSRDC had invited Expression of Interest (EOI) for operating the trauma centre. MSRDC had also invited tenders for providing Quick Response Vehicles (QRV) for 10 years on the Expressway.

Authorities say
MSRDC Managing Director R Mopalwar said, “We are in talks with various agencies. The trauma centre will be operational at the earliest.”
