Call it the influence of a woman railway minister or an acknowledgement that the fairer sex is a better homemaker - the South Eastern Railway (SER) has deployed a team of its female employees to test the quality of food and beverages served in trains.

The initiative is a brainchild of SER general manager AK Jain who constituted the team comprising five women officials spearheaded by assistant commercial manager Indrani Bandyopadhyay.

The officials will pay surprise visits to trains in five different SER divisions to check the quality of food items.

"Women can take care of every household activity and they are experts in dealing with such issues. They are traditionally good homemakers. So we have set up this all-women team to check the quality of food products in our trains," an SER spokesperson said.

He said the team has already paid a surprise visit to Gitanjali Express and submitted a report on the condition of its kitchen and food quality to the railway authority concerned.

"It's a very unique and positive step that we have taken to improve the quality and services to our passengers," he said.

According to a member of the team, food inspection was earlier done by railwaymen who carried out routine checking.

"Besides food quality, the newly-formed team takes care of the kitchen condition and hygiene," the team member said.
