Cracker-bursting plans go for a toss, fireworks dealers report losses

Continuous rain spoilt the festive mood of Bangaloreans on the last day of Diwali yesterday. Fireworks dealers were also hit with sales going down drastically.

Bangaloreans were disappointed at being robbed of the chance to burst crackers on Balipadyami, the last day of Diwali.

"I had planned to burst crackers today, but I couldn't because of the continuous rain since morning. My plan is completely ruined," said Arun Kumar (23), a resident of JC Nagar.

A representative of Prabhu Trading Company, a fireworks dealer, said, "The sales of firecrackers this year were dismal as it is. Now, the rains have brought them down by nearly 90 per cent compared to the last few days."

The huge shops put up at Palace Grounds, which were busy for the first two days, also wore a deserted look on Balipadyami.

Forecast
The city had recorded 25.9 cm and the airport recorded 27 cm of rainfall at 5.30 pm yesterday. The city is likely to witness heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 48 hours, said weather department officials.
