Cousin realised the meaning of his last words too late
The last words of a PUC student who hanged himself to death on Wednesday were: You will never catch me again.
Nandu, an 18-year-old II PU student of Sheshadripuram College in Yelahanka, killed himself because the college authorities refused to give him an examination hall ticket due to lack of attendance, his cousin Manjunath told MiD DAY.
After Nandu returned home from college on Wednesday, he met Manjunath who lives a few yards away, and other friends for a chat.
When it was time to leave, Manjunath said: "I'll catch you later." But Nandu turned back and said, "You will never catch me again."
Nandu dropped his keys at Manjunath's house, went back to his house and locked the house from inside.
"I realised the meaning of his last words two hours later when his father Govindaraju rushed to my house saying Nandu was hanging in his bedroom," Manjunath said.
Conflicting reports
Manjuanth said the college had demanded Rs 8,000 as penalty which Nandu couldn't pay. He did not want to lose one year as his aim was to get a decent job at the earliest and support his family whose finances were not in good shape.
But Nandu's brother Kiran Kumar said he had not discussed the penalty.
"The authorities generally inform parents if the student is short of attendance but we did not receive any complaint," he said.
Nandu was a meritorious student and secured 75 per cent in SSLC and over 60 per cent in his 1st PU exams, Kiran said.
He was keen on completing the course with good marks so that he could do his graduation and then MBA, he said.
The college authorities were not available for comment.
Regrets
Kiran said he had invited Nandu to his friend's house but he had preferred to stay home. "If I had stayed in the house, I could have saved him," he rued.
