Join students, cyclists, painters and musicians at Marine Drive today in what is being touted as the largest day of activism ever. October 24 is the International Day of Climate Action and the parade will boldly feature the figure 350. "It's the most important number in the world," says Ayesha D'Souza of Kids For Tigers, which will participate along with Greenpeace and other environmental initiatives. "It's what scientists say is the safe upper limit for carbon dioxide in the atmosphere."
More than 4,000 events are taking place in over 150 countries around the world today to drive 350 and all it represents into the human imagination. People at the parade will gather for a big group photo depicting that important message. Umbrella organisation 350.org will assemble all the photos from each location for a gigantic, global, visual petition.
These global actions come 6 weeks before the decisive United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen where leaders from all nations will draw up a new climate treaty.
People will send in thousands of images of citizens gathering at important places around the world from the melting glaciers of Mount Everest to the sinking beaches of the Maldives displaying the number 350 creatively.
International campaign 350.org will collect the pictures, put them on the big screens in Times Square and project them at the UN headquarters. On October 25, they will be published in newspapers. Copies of the images and the stories that go with them will be delivered to national delegates and heads of state the world over, making 350 a clear and specific goal, unlike vague demands to "stop global warming". Don't turn up with paper leaflets, pamphlets, banners and plastic costumes though, warns Ayesha. "Remember, we are reminding others to live eco-friendly lives!"u00a0
