Panic-stricken Delhiites made 6,500 distress calls to the PCR in one day
As rains lashed the parched city on Monday, distress calls flooded the Police Control Room (PCR) helpline.
Around 6,500 calls were received, compared to 5,000 such calls on Sunday, as people dialed 100 after being stuck in traffic or scared by the rising water levels.
With 130 mm rainfall crippling the Capital on the first weekday, many roads were blocked. Tuesday too saw a similar situation.
"During such heavy rainfall or when some natural calamity strikes, people dial the PCR. Telephone networks also get jammed and residents call the police for help," said a senior police official.
The total number of calls received by the Police Control Room on Tuesday was much less.
Meanwhile, on Tuesday morning, traffic jams were reported from many parts of the city. The worst hit routes included Chirag Dilli, Dwarka Sector 6, 7 and 22, the Moolchand crossing, Bijwasan, Andheri Mor, Bhajanpura, Sultanpuri, Lado Sarai, Ashram Chowk, Lajpat Nagar, Sarita Vihar and Maharani Bagh.
"I was stuck for more than an hour in traffic. I had to reach office by 10 am but because of waterlogging near Moolchand Hospital, I was delayed," said Amlesh Dahiya, a software professional.
