30 January,2025 01:35 PM IST | Mumbai | Prasun ChoudhariThe Election Commission on Thursday asked AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal not to mix the issue of increased ammonia in Yamuna with his allegation of river poisoning, and gave him an opportunity to explain his charges against the Haryana government, reported news agency PTI. Not satisfied with Kejriwal’s reply, the EC asked the former chief minister to provide factual evidence with specific and pointed response to the type, quantity, nature and manner of poisoning of Yamuna. He was also asked to share details of engineers, location and methodology of detecting the "poison" by Delhi Jal Board staff by Friday 11 am, failing which the Commission will be free to take appropriate decisions in the matter, stated PTI. While responding to the Election Commission notice over his claim the Haryana government was "mixing poison" in Yamuna, Kejriwal on Wednesday said raw water received from the BJP-ruled state in the recent past has been "highly contaminated and extremely poisonous" for human health. If such "toxic water" is allowed to be consumed by people, it would lead to grave health hazards and fatality, the former Delhi chief minister said in his 14-page reply to the EC. Delhi Assembly elections 2025: PM Modi attacks Arvind Kejriwal over 'poisoning Yamuna' remark PM Modi on Wednesday attacked AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal over his remarks that "poison" is being mixed in the Yamuna, saying that fearing their defeat in the Delhi polls, "AAP-da people" have turned desperate, PTI reported. Speaking in a public meeting in New Delhi's Kartar Nagar in the run-up to the February 5 Delhi assembly polls, he also linked AAP leaders to serial killer Charles Sobhraj, who gained notoriety for duping people. "Those who built 'sheesh mahal' and those who looted public money worth thousands of crores of rupees can never think of the welfare of the poor. That is why they are spreading lies in Delhi. These AAP-da people speak lies with such innocence that people get trapped," Modi said, PTI cited. "You may have heard of Charles Sobhraj. He was a known thug, but he was such an expert at duping people with innocence that every time people would get duped by him. That is why one has to remain cautious of such people," he said. Delhi has made it obvious that the "AAP-da" government's excuses, bogus promises, and "loot and lies" would no longer be tolerated, Modi said in an fervent appeal to voters to give him an opportunity to serve after 25 years of Congress and AAP rule. 30 January,2025 01:02 PM IST | New Delhi | mid-day online correspondentMaharashtra cabinet minister Uday Samant on Wednesday pushed for formulating a strict policy to deal with people who he said prevent state residents from speaking in their mother tongue Marathi, reported news agency PTI. The Marathi language minister asserted any attempt to prevent Maharashtra residents from communicating in their native tongue will not be tolerated and will invite stringent action. Responding to an incident in Thane district's Dombivli area where some non-Marathi residents of a housing society reportedly opposed a socio-religious ceremony (haldi kunku) of the Marathi community on Monday, Samant said there was a need to formulate a policy to stop such episodes. "Marathi is our mother tongue, and any attempt to prevent us from speaking it must be met with stringent action. Such intimidation will not be tolerated. When we communicate with people from other states, we respect their language and do not insult them. Likewise, if anyone tries to stop us from speaking Marathi in our own state or from conducting cultural traditions like 'haldi kunku', then the law must be made more stringent against such acts," said Samant, reported PTI. The minister was speaking at a press conference organised to brief on the 'Vishwa Marathi Sammelan' (World Marathi Conference), which is being organised from January 31 to February 2 at Pune's Fergusson College. Speaking about a recent controversy over Marathi not being used in cricket commentary on Hotstar, a popular streaming platform, during matches, Samant said except for Marathi, commentary is taking place in all other languages, reported PTI. "I have spoken to authorities there about it. Be it, multiplexes, theatres, and any other establishments, I will be instructing them to ensure the Marathi language is not met with any injustice," he asserted. (With inputs from PTI)
30 January,2025 12:10 PM IST | Pune | mid-day online correspondentNCP (SP) Lok Sabha member Supriya Sule on Thursday slammed the Pune civic administration as she blamed the "urban planning failure" and rising pollution for the outbreak of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS), a rare never disorder, in the city, reported news agency PTI. There is a need to find the scientific cause behind the prevalence of GBS cases, the parliamentarian representing Baramati in Maharashtra's Pune district told reporters. Sule demanded that the government bear all medical expenses of the GBS patients, claiming the disease was prevalent due to the "flawed management", reported PTI. She visited a well, located in Nanded village off Sinhgad Road area in Pune, from where contaminated water is suspected to have been supplied to adjoining localities, leading to the rise in GBS cases. A 56-year-old woman from Pune is suspected to have died of GBS on Wednesday, while a 40-year-old man from Solapur died on Sunday. Till Wednesday, 127 suspected patients of GBS were found in Pune and elsewhere in the state, as per officials. "I visited the well and the (nearby) area to understand the current GBS situation. People in the area are living in tremendous fear. I am going to put forth this issue in today's district planning and development committee meeting," Sule said, reported PTI. Terming the current GBS situation as an "outbreak" (of the disease), Sule said all round efforts are needed to contain it, reported PTI. The MP said she has been writing to the civic body and the state government about these localities, which were recently brought under the purview of the Pune Municipal Corporation. Despite the basic infrastructure such as STPs (sewage treatment plants) lacking, permissions to new buildings and projects are being given, she claimed. "Now the current situation (of GBS) is all because of urban planning failure. After a few days, reports from labs will be available but as of today, it looks that due to urban planning failure, pollution, be it water, air, diseases are increasing and immediate steps need to be taken," she said, reported PTI. "There is a need to find the scientific cause behind this prevalence of GBS cases by consulting experts," the NCP (SP) working president said, reported PTI. Sule said rivers and dams are getting polluted and the government should pay heed to all these things. "Though we are in opposition, we are ready to cooperate with the government on these issues," she said, reported PTI. "The common people should not be held hostage just because your policies are flawed," Sule added. The Lok Sabha member said she has already spoken to the Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change over the GBS issue, reported PTI. Authorities on Wednesday said 144 water samples from different parts of the city have been sent for chemical and biological analysis to a public health laboratory, and samples from eight water sources found contaminated. GBS is a rare condition that causes sudden numbness and muscle weakness, with symptoms including severe weakness in the limbs, loose motions, etc. Bacterial and viral infections generally lead to GBS as they weaken the immunity of patients, and in the present case, the disease is suspected to have been triggered by contaminated water, according to doctors. Meanwhile, four more children suffering from suspected GB syndrome were undergoing treatment at the BC Roy Hospital and Institute of Child Health, the sources told PTI. GBS is a rare condition that causes sudden numbness and muscle weakness, with symptoms including severe weakness in the limbs and loose motion. Bacterial and viral infections generally lead to GBS as they weaken the immunity of patients, as per doctors. 30 January,2025 09:52 AM IST | Kolkata | mid-day online correspondentNCP-SCP MP Supriya Sule visited the GBS (Guillain-Barre Syndrome) affected area at Sinhgad Road in Pune on Thursday morning, reported news agency ANI. She inspected the water sources that supply water to locals. She also interacted with the people, listened to their complaints, reported ANI. The total number of suspected cases of GBS in Pune and other districts of the State is 127 with 72 confirmed cases, the Maharashtra Public Health Department said in a press release on Wednesday. "As of today, 127 suspected cases of GBS have been identified, with 2 suspected deaths. Out of these, 72 patients have been confirmed as having GBS. 23 patients are from Pune Municipal Corporation, 73 from newly added villages in the PMC area, 13 from Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, 9 from Pune Rural, and 9 from other districts. Among the affected individuals, 20 are currently on ventilator support," the press release said. On Tuesday, the Director General Indian Council of Medical Research Dr Rajiv Bahl said that the cases are under investigation as a team of experts has collected various samples. "Samples of stool and blood of those infected are being tested at the NIV Pune lab, but yet to get any definite leads on the cause behind the spread," Dr Bahl said. He said that the cause or link of GBS is found only in 40 per cent of cases. The Campylobacter jejunum bacteria were found in 4 stool samples that were collected from 21 GBS patients in Pune, which were tested by the National Institute for Virology (NIV), Pune, while norovirus was found in some. The Union Health Ministry has deputed a high-level multi-disciplinary team to Pune to aid state authorities in instituting interventions and managing the spurt in suspected and confirmed cases of Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) in the city. The central team sent to Maharashtra comprises seven experts from the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) Delhi, NIMHANS Bengaluru, Regional Office of Health & Family Welfare and National Institute for Virology (NIV), Pune. Three experts from NIV, Pune were already supporting the local authorities. The team is working closely with the state health departments and taking stock of the on-ground situation to recommend necessary public health interventions. The central team has been tasked with monitoring the situation and coordinating with the state. The water samples from different parts of the city have been sent for chemical and biological analysis to the Public Health Laboratory. GBS can develop sudden weakness in the hands or legs/ paralysis. People could have trouble while walking or weakness with sudden onset and diarrhoea (for sustained periods). Guidance has also been issued for citizens to ensure maintaining the water quality, such as drinking boiled water, and food should be fresh and clean. The infection can be avoided also by not keeping cooked and uncooked food items together. Describing the disease's progression, Dr. Praveen Gupta, Principal Director & Chief of Neurology at Fortis Hospital said, "GBS occurs when antibodies, created to fight bacterial or viral infections like Campylobacter jejuni or respiratory infections, cross-react with the peripheral nerves. This leads to ascending paralysis, starting in the legs and moving upward. In severe cases, patients may lose the ability to breathe due to thoracic muscle weakness and require ventilatory support." During interrogation, however, he allegedly confessed to killing his wife Sunnati (25), Nuh police spokesperson said. Police nabbed Shakir who allegedly provided a country-made pistol to Inayat after an encounter. Shakir received a bullet injury to his leg in retaliatory firing and was sent to a hospital for treatment. "During investigation, the main accused of the murder turned out to be the woman's husband Inayat. A team of Crime Investigation Agency (CIA), Punhana, led by Inspector Sandeep Mor, was formed to nab Shakir who had several cases registered against him on robbery, theft and possessing illegal weapons. 30 January,2025 08:29 AM IST | Gurugram | PTIPrime Minister Narendra Modi shored up BJP's election campaign in Delhi as he mounted a strong attack on the AAP government and party leader Arvind Kejriwal during a rally in the national capital. The war of words continued between leaders of BJP, AAP and Congress with Kejriwal and Rahul Gandhi also addressing election rallies. The issue of alleged toxic water in the Yamuna continued to hog the limelight with PM Modi launching a scathing attack on Kejriwal. He repeatedly took "AApda" jibes at the Aam Aadmi Party. "People of 'aapda' say that people of Haryana mix poison in water sent to Delhi. This is not just an insult to Haryana but to all Indians. Ours is a country where providing drinking water is considered a good deed...Such fear of losing that they are saying anything. I am sure Delhi will teach a lesson to people who say such things. In aapda walon ki llutiya Yamuna mein hi doobegi...," PM Modi said at a public rally in Ghonda. "For their political benefits, they have committed one more sin, which can never be forgiven. History will never forgive them for this. The country and the people of Haryana will never forgive them. A former CM of Delhi has levelled disgusting allegations on people of Haryana. Due to fear of losing, people from 'aapda' have got rattled. Are people of Haryana different from those in Delhi? Are relatives of those living in Haryana not residing in Delhi? Can the people of Haryana poison the water their own people drink? The water sent by Haryana is consumed by everyone living in Delhi, which also includes this Prime Minister, the Chief Justices, all the embassies, poor of Delhi..." PM Modi said without naming Kejriwal. Kejriwal replied to the Election Commission's notice over his claim that the Haryana government was "mixing poison" in Yamuna river and said the remarks were made in furtherance of an imperative public duty to highlight the severe toxicity and contamination of raw water received from Haryana, "which presents an imminent and direct threat to public health". Addressing a rally in Timarpur, Kejriwal said his party's government gives facilities such as free power, water and education in government schools to people of Delhi but for the share of taxes that come to the Delhi government and alleged that "BJP government at Centre allows its capitalist friends to loot this money". Rahul Gandhi, who addressed a rally in Bawana, attacked both the AAP and BJP. "Kejriwal and Modi both make false promises...Kejriwal had promised Delhi that he would clean the Yamuna river and drink its water. Five years ago, he had promised that he would drink the water of the Yamuna River...I challenge him to go and drink the water of the Yamuna River," he said. "Let's talk about employment, development and progress. You will remember that during Sheila Dikshit's regime, roads were built in Delhi. Development took place. You have to drink dirty water but Kejriwal lives in a 'sheeshmahal.' He lives in a house worth crores of rupees. He gives you false statements," the LoP added. Congress also released its election manifesto for Delhi polls, emphasising its promises including Rs 2500 grant to women and Rs 25 health insurance for residents. Party leader Jairam Ramesh also spoke of the need of clean air for residents of the national capital. BJP MP Anurag Thakur took a dig at Kejriwal, claiming that he neither took a dip nor cleaned the Yamuna river. "He (Arvind Kejriwal) had promised to clean Yamuna River 10 years ago and even five years ago Arvind Kejriwal had said that give me five years, I will take a dip in Yamuna River and will also clean it. Five years have passed but he neither took a dip nor cleaned the Yamuna River. Whereas Yamuna River has been polluted more than before. Now our request to the people of Delhi is to defeat AAP and make BJP win. We will clean Yamuna, end air pollution, provide clean water in Delhi, eliminate garbage mountains ..," he told ANI. Delhi Minister and AAP candidate from the Greater Kailash assembly constituency Saurabh Bhardwaj told ANI, "People love us a lot and have full faith that AAP is going to form a strong government by getting a majority of more than 65 seats." The day also saw Kejriwal and Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini locking horns over the issue of alleged toxicity in the Yamuna water. Kejriwal alleged that Saini, who took a sip of water, was actually "pretending" and later "spat back the water". CM Saini visited the banks of the Yamuna River in Delhi's Palla village today, where he took a sip of water to counter accusations made by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. "Haryana Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini pretended to drink Yamuna water... and then spat the same water back into the Yamuna," Kejriwal said in a post on X, along with the video of CM Saini. Voting for Delhi assembly polls will be held on February 5. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies.
