Thailand's red shirts on Wednesday announced the end of their protest rally in Bangkok after armoured personnel carriers broke through the outer barriers of their protest site early in the morning.

Natthawut Saikua, speaking on behalf of all the red-shirts leaders at site, said they decided to call an end to the rally to avoid further loss of lives, Xinhua news agency reported.

The nine-week protest has led to fierce street fighting that has paralysed central Bangkok, leaving 68 dead and more than 1,400 injured. An Italian journalist was shot dead on Wednesday.
