Five years in front of the public eye was not all Twitter was celebrating this past week: the popular microblogging community also logged new Tweets Per Second (TPS) records during the FIFA Women's World Cup.

Twitterers were furiously tweeting score updates, player stats and live updates during both the Women's World Cup Final between Japan and the USA and the Paraguay-Brazil match, sending terms such as the #WWC and #worldcupfinal hashtags and players' names to the top of Twitter's most talked about topics list.

Twitter jumped on its own @twitter account to share the news on the morning of July 18, tweeting "New Tweets per second records! End of the #WWC final: 7196 TPS. And today's end to the Paraguay/Brazil game is now 2nd with 7166 TPS."

The previous TPS record was reached in March 2011 when the volume of tweets spiked at more than 5,000 TPS in the moments after Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

During the men's FIFA World Cup Final in 2010, Twitter reached a record of more than 2,000 TPS.
