Vijay Diwas, or Victory Day, is celebrated across India to honor a historic victory — the India-Pakistan war of 1971, which led to the creation of Bangladesh. But the story goes much deeper than just a military victory. Let’s travel back to 1971, a time when the world was divided by the tensions of the Cold War. Meanwhile, India was facing a critical situation to the east. The situation between East Pakistan which is now Bangladesh and West Pakistan which is now Pakistan, had reached a breaking point By 1971, In East Pakistan, people were struggling for independence. The Bengali population had been demanding their rights and a fair share of power for years. East Pakistan, which geographically was far from the capital, Islamabad, felt politically and economically neglected by the central government in West Pakistan. Tributes were paid to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in the 1999 Kargil War. Army Chief General Manoj Pande laid a wreath at the War Memorial. Other than him, Indian Navy Chief R Hari Kumar also paid homage to the soldiers. Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari paid tribute to the soldiers.
