The Manchester-based Engineer, on a brief visit to Mumbai, presented some valuable memorabilia to be auctioned, proceeds of which would go to the school's boarding facility.
Engineer left a T-shirt signed by the Indian cricket team, a Manchester United T-shirt signed by football stars Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo as well as football legend Pele. In addition to the attire, was a miniature bat signed by Pele, Rooney and Ronaldo.
Engineer is a successful businessman and is known to be close to some of England's top sporting names including Andrew Flintoff. In these hard financial times even the wealthy would not part with memorabilia such as these. But Engineer is different.
"What I left them is important to them; it's no big deal for me. It's for a good cause the poor," Engineer told MiD DAY last night. "I've always been grateful to Don Bosco for what they have done for me. They gave me a start in life."
Rector of Don Bosco High School, Fr Jude D'Mello was overwhelmed by the gesture. "This is such a great, charitable gesture... highly commendable," he said.
