'We were not up to the mark': Skipper Ajinkya Rahane

Mumbai skipper Ajinkya Rahane admitted that his defending champions failed to live up to their standard, resulting in a five-wicket loss to Jammu & Kashmir on Saturday.  “Firstly, let’s give credit to Jammu and Kashmir. I thought they played this game really well. They bowled consistently in the right areas. They challenged our batting line-up in both innings, so credit to them.  ‘They deserved to win’ “We were not up to the mark as a team, as a unit. They played really well, so they deserved to win,” Rahane told reporters after J&K’s win on Saturday.  Rahane, who led Mumbai to their 42nd Ranji title last season, also admitted that the J&K team read the conditions better. “Frankly, we didn’t expect the ball would seam that much. We thought it will be a good wicket to bat on and it will spin on Day Two, but obviously, they bowled really well,” Rahane remarked.   “This season they’ve [J&K] been doing really well. We saw videos of their fast bowling unit.” When asked whether Mumbai’s batting collapse in both innings is a concern, Rahane said: “As a team, I mean Rohit [Sharma], [Yashasvi] Jaiswal, they’ve been playing and are coming here after a long time — playing international cricket coming into domestic cricket. Other guys are playing white-ball cricket. If you see our Ranji Trophy set up, we had five changes. We played different teams in the first five-six games so it’s tough to analyse in this one match. All the guys coming in for this game are quality players. “So, one bad game can happen and I’m not too worried. There are positives — Shardul’s [Thakur] both innings, Mohit’s [Avasthi] five-for. Tanush’s [Kotian] batting again is a positive.” No excuses Rahane reckoned playing red-ball cricket, white-ball cricket and again the red-ball format is a challenge, but it’s a learning phase for players to progress further. “This is not an excuse, but I feel this is a learning experience for all of us as a team on how we can do better,” he said. Though after the sixth league game Mumbai are in third position with 22 points after Jammu & Kashmir and Baroda in Elite Group ‘A’, Rahane is hopeful Mumbai will play the knockout games. “There’s still one per cent chance for us to qualify [for the knockouts]. So you never know. Our main thing is to learn from this game,” he added.

We never gave up, told each other 'let's try': Ravi Bishnoi after thrilling win

India's Ravi Bishnoi said he and Tilak Varma did not give up even when the odds were loaded heavily against them in the second T20I against England here on Saturday, telling each other that they would pull through. India won a close match by two wickets, achieving the victory target of 166 with four ball remaining, with Tilak Varma smashing an unbeaten 55-ball 72 and Bishnoi giving him company. Bishnoi, who struck two boundaries towards the fag end and made the chase easier, said he wanted to give as much strike to Varma as he was well set. "(We told each other) let's try, we will get (achieve) it. He (Varma) was set and I did not want to play a rash shot because we had less wickets in hand," said Bishnoi at the post-match presentation. Bishnoi added that he was bent upon making an impact in the match and show that even bowlers can chip in with the bat at crucial junctures. "Today only I posted a reel on Instagram, saying why should batters have all the fun. When slip came in, I knew he (Liam Livingstone) would try and dismiss me with leg-spin. But I hit him with the spin for four," said Bishnoi, adding that this was one of Varma's "best T20 innings". Player of the Match Varma said the batters had worked hard in the nets to prepare themselves for the challenges posed by the likes of Jofra Archer and Mark Wood. "We were prepared. Archer and Wood are quick, our guys prepared well, we worked hard in the nets and we got the results," said Varma. On his partnership with Bishnoi, Varma said, "I told him to hold his shape and hit the gap. He played a flick and hit a four off Livingstone, that made it a bit easier." "The wicket was slightly two-paced. I was talking with Gautam (Gambhir) sir yesterday, he said whatever happens, you should play according to the situation. If team needs 10 an over, you should take charge, if something else, you should stand till the end. "Team discussed that left-right combination will be a good option, it will be difficult for opposition bowlers as well." Skipper Suryakumar Yadav was relieved at India achieving victory after being in serious trouble at one point. "A little bit of relief. The way the game was going, we felt 160 was good, but the way they bowled, good that the game went down to the wire. We have been playing with an extra batter for the last few series. "That batter gives us two-three overs. The chat was to play like the last game. Good to see we are playing aggressive brand of cricket, at the same time, guys put their hands up and stitched the small partnerships. " Very happy with the way Tilak batted, something to learn for everyone. Good to see someone take responsibility. Ravi Bishnoi putting the hard work in the nets, he wants to contribute with the bat," added Surya. England skipper Jos Buttler too gave credit to Varma for taking the game away from his side.' "Great game. Really exciting end, credit to Tilak for getting them over the line. We created a lot of chances, really pushed them close. Really pleased the way we went about with the bat. "There was the aggression we asked for, nearly a defendable score. Jamie Smith on debut playing the way he did, Brydon Carse and the guys creating chances with the ball. We will improve on it all but happy with the style. "They are going to play three spinners, so they are going to take wickets. If we take them for runs, I am happy." Pak vs WI 2nd Test: 20 wickets fall on Day 1

The West Indies gained a slender nine-run lead over Pakistan on Saturday as 20 wickets tumbled, with spinners ruling the roost on the opening day of the second Test in Multan.  For the home side, 38-year-old left-arm tweaker Noman Ali was the star of the show, becoming the first Pakistani spinner to claim a hat-trick, as he ended the day with figures of 6-41.  West Indies were bowled out for 163 after opting to bat first. But the wind was soon knocked out of Pakistan’s sails when it was their turn to bat.  Left-arm spinners, Jomel Warrican (4-43) and Gudakesh Motie (3-49) teamed up to bowl Pakistan out for 154 at the close of play. Ranji Trophy 2024-25: Gill’s ton in vain as Punjab lose to Karnataka

Punjab skipper and opener Shubman Gill (102) struck a classy century, but failed to save his team from an innings defeat to Karnataka in their Ranji Trophy Group C match here on Saturday. Gill added 95 runs on the third day to his overnight seven to score 102 from 171 balls from which he struck 14 fours and three sixes. He scored his first fifty off 119 balls and the next 50 came in just 40 balls. He was the eighth batsman dismissed in Punjab’s second essay after they conceded a huge 420-run lead in the first innings. Punjab were shot out for 213 in 63.4 overs in their second innings to lose by an innings and 207 runs. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. England T20Is: Dube set to replace Reddy, Ramandeep in for Rinku

Mumbai all-rounder Shivam Dube will replace Nitish Kumar Reddy in the Indian squad for the last three T20 Internationals against England after the young power-hitter sustained a side strain, the BCCI said on Saturday. Nitish sustained the injury during the nets session on Friday ahead of India’s second T20I against England at Chennai. “Reddy will head to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru for further management,” the BCCI release stated. He could require around four weeks of rest and rehabilitation to come back to competitive cricket. This could mean that Reddy’s comeback will happen only during the upcoming IPL for Sunrisers Hyderabad. Meanwhile, the BCCI said lower-order batter Rinku Singh sustained a low back spasm while fielding in the first T20I against England on January 22 at the Eden Gardens. “He is progressing well and the BCCI medical team is monitoring him closely. He is ruled out of the 2nd and 3rd games of the ongoing T20I series,” the BCCI release said. Ramandeep Singh has been added to India’s squad as a cover for Rinku Singh. MCA to organise third edition of T20 Mumbai League after IPL 18

The Mumbai Cricket Association’s Apex Council held an emergent meeting on Friday, when they decided to organise the third edition of the T20 Mumbai League after the completion of IPL-18 in May.   “We have decided to organise the T20 Mumbai League. We will be planning to schedule it after the completion of IPL from May 26 or 27 to June 5,” MCA secretary Abhay Hadap told Sunday mid-day.   The final of the IPL-18 is scheduled to be played on May 25. When asked about the difficulties in organising the tournament just after the conclusion of IPL, Hadap said: “We will get permission from BCCI for the scheduled period. We feel MCA’s T20 League is necessary considering the future of our players. There will be eight teams participating in the T20 tournament, which will provide players an opportunity to showcase their talent.” Triumph Knights emerged champions in the inaugural T20 Mumbai League in 2018. Meanwhile, Hadap also revealed that the MCA will soon initiate the process to inaugurate the association’s cricket museum.

Mighty Mumbai stumble at hands of J&K

A Spirited Jammu & Kashmir gave Ranji Trophy defending champions Mumbai a repeat dose of their 2014-15 heroics to outclass Ajinkya Rahane’s Mumbai team by five wickets in an Elite Group ‘A’ Ranji match at the MCA-BKC ground on Saturday. A decade ago, they had shocked a Suryakumar Yadav-led Mumbai side at the Wankhede Stadium, clinching a historic four-wicket win by chasing 237.J&K chase 205-run target. On Saturday, they chased glory again, achieving their 205-run target without much of a sweat. Shubham Khajuria (left) and Vivrant Sharma during their 75-run stand The star-studded Mumbai playing XI comprised five Test players — India’s Test and ODI captain Rohit Sharma, his Test opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal, captain Rahane, top-order batsman Shreyas Iyer and all-rounder Shardul Thakur. However, except second innings centurion Thakur (51, 119 and 2-39), no other India player lived up to their reputation.  The only bowler who kept Mumbai’s hopes alive in front of 200-plus spectators at the BKC ground on Saturday afternoon was promising left-arm spinner Shams Mulani, who was dropped for the 50-over Vijay Hazare Trophy tournament recently. Mulani fought hard, bowling 15 overs in two spells and claimed 4-54. Pacer Mohit Avasthi, who claimed 5-52 in the first innings, got 1-33 in the second essay.  J&K opener Shubham Khajuria once again emerged as the top scorer (53 and 45) for the visitors, just like he did during the 2014-15 triumph when he scored 107 and 78.   Khajuria, 29, batted sensibly and scored his first attacking shot after 40 minutes when he dispatched Avasthi for a superb on-drive and later finished the over with a splendid straight drive.  Avasthi gave Mumbai their first break in the 11th over when he had opener Yawer Hassan (24, 4x4) caught behind by Hardik Tamore. Mulani breaks crucial stand When Khajuria and one-drop Vivrant Sharma (38, 5x4) went to lunch unbeaten on 28 and 27 respectively, J&K needed 120 to win with nine wickets intact. Khajuria looked confident during his two hour-plus stay at the crease. However, Mulani, upset his furniture as the batsman stepped out. Mulani sent back Vivrant in his next over; caught by Avasthi who was placed perfectly just near the long-on fence. Abdul Samad’s 20-ball 24 with five hits to the fence was valuable while Abid Mushtaq (32-ball 32 not out, 3x4, 2x6) wicketkeeper-batter Kanhaiya Wadhawan (19 not out) ensured J&K got home. Pacer Yudhvir Singh (4-31 and 3-64), who dismissed Rohit in the second innings and scored 20 at No. 9 in the first innings, claimed the Player of the Match award.  Earlier in the day, the J&K bowlers needed just seven overs to break the hosts’ eighth wicket 184-run partnership between Shardul Thakur and Kotian. J&K now lead the Group ‘A’ table with 29 points in six games. Mumbai, who will be playing their last league game against Meghalaya at home starting Thursday, have 22 points. Arshdeep Singh named ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year

Team India left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh was crowned the ICC Men's T20I Cricketer of the Year 2024 following his heroics in the national side's T20 World Cup triumph. Arshdeep Singh claimed a total of 36 wickets in 18 matches, last year. Arshdeep Singh was also named in the ICC Men's T20I team of the Year 2024 alongside skipper Rohit Sharma, Jasorit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya. In the T20 World Cup in the Americas, Arshdeep showcased his mastery in both powerplay and death bowling and ended the tournament as the joint-highest wicket-taker alongside Afghanistan's Fazalhaq Farooqi with 17 scalps at an average of 12.64 across eight matches. His standout performance was one of the major factors behind India's campaign culminating in a dramatic seven-run victory over South Africa in the final in Barbados. In the final, he claimed 2/20, dismissing South African captain Aiden Markram early and breaking a threatening partnership by removing Quinton de Kock during the middle overs. Tasked with bowling the penultimate over, Arshdeep conceded just four runs, setting the stage for Hardik Pandya to seal the win. Also Read: Rohit Sharma named skipper of ICC men's T20I team of the year dominated by Indian players Arshdeep's T20I record in 2024 further underscores his dominance, 36 wickets in 18 matches at an average of 15.31 and an economy rate of 7.49. His strike rate of 10.80 was a testament to his wicket-taking prowess, especially given his challenging role in the powerplay and at the death. Only four players in the world have managed to register more wickets than Arshdeep Singh in a calendar year, namely Saudi Arabia's Usman Najeeb (38), Sri Lanka's Wanindu Hasaranga (38), UAE's Junaid Siddique (40) and Hong Kong's Ehsan Khan (46). Arshdeep Singh's best bowling figures in 2024 are four wickets for nine runs which came against the USA during the World Cup group stage matches. With 97 scalps, Arshdeep is now the highest wicket-taker in the format for India. Since his international debut in 2022, Arshdeep has steadily risen as one of India's most reliable pacers. Arshdeep Singh had a number of impressive displays in the year, not least when he ripped through the USA in New York during the T20 World Cup group stage, bagging remarkable returns of 4/9 in his four overs. But Arshdeep's most significant performance of the year came on the biggest stage of all, as he played a huge part in helping India successfully defend their total of 176 in the final in Barbados. Excellent with the new ball up top, Arshdeep struck in the powerplay to have the dangerous South African skipper Markram caught behind in just the third over. And when India were in need of a wicket in the middle overs it was Arshdeep that provided the breakthrough, dismissing a set Quinton de Kock when the Proteas looked to be in control of the chase. India's collective effort at the death was astonishing as South Africa pulled up seven runs short of their target, and Arshdeep played a huge role in that, returning to the attack to bowl the penultimate over with South Africa requiring 20 from 12 deliveries. Arshdeep delivered a near-perfect death over under the greatest pressure, conceding just four runs to leave Pandya with 16 runs to defend in the final over, a job that he spectacularly did.
