While most organisations are adopting various measures to cut costs, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) u2014 unhampered by the global meltdown u2014 has offered a member from each of its affiliated units a week-long all expenses paid trip to South Africa to witness the concluding phase of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Though the BCCI has 27 full members, a batch of 23 reached Johannesburg yesterday to witness the last week of the IPL. It is learnt that the Board split the junket into two batches. As a result, around half a dozen representatives were sent for the inaugural weekend of the IPL. They will return to India on Tuesday along with the BCCI office bearers, most of whom are already in South Africa.
A BCCI insider revealed that the IPL gave the cash-rich Board a perfect opportunity to arrange such a trip that was originally planned during the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies. Then, the BCCI had planned a similar junket for India's three Super Eight games, including the high-profile clash against Pakistan. However, the trip didn't materialise thanks to India's first round exit from the prestigious tournament.
The Board is estimated to be spending approximately Rs one lakh per person for the week-long trip.
One wonders whether the purpose of spending so much is to show their state association members how professionally such big events are organised abroad or is it an exercise to ensure that there would be minimum opposition when it comes to the BCCI elections.
