No happy birthday for Gaekwad

Former India batsman and coach Anshuman Gaekwad has cancelled his birthday plans following the death of his first Test captain Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi.

"I'm trying to get a flight ticket to Delhi. I just want to see my captain, want to touch him," Gaekwad, who turns 59 today, told MiD DAY yesterday.

"I was in touch with Sharmila (Pataudi's wife) half an hour before the news of his death broke," he added.

Gaekwad and Pataudi were scheduled to make a trip to a game reserve in November.

"I was going to make the trip. When our friend who was organising this tour spoke to Pat about this trip, he told him, "make sure Anshuman is there."
