He said: "I really believe football can help. When I was a young player at West Ham, we used to go into the schools every afternoon and coach kids. All the players went, including Trevor Brooking, Frank Lampard and me.
"It was great for us and brilliant for the kids to mix with footballers," the Sun quoted him, as saying.
Redknapp, 64, whose club found itself in the middle of some of the worst violence, added: "All clubs - including Spurs - do some amazing work in the community.
He added: "Something has to be done because clearly, things are not getting any better. We certainly live in worrying times."
