NBA followers push the league ahead of the National Football League, which has almost 1.7 million followers on Twitter, or Major League Baseball, which needs about 30,000 more just to reach half of the NBA's total.
"Surpassing the two-million mark on Twitter is a testament to our tremendous fans around the globe who are passionate about the league and their favorite teams and players," NBA marketing vice president Melissa Rosenthal-Brenner said.
When the Twitter feeds of all 30 NBA clubs and more than 165 players are added into the mix, more than 23 million combined Twitter feed followings are keeping up to date with NBA news on the social networking site.
The NBA set a record for tweets per second during game seven of June's NBA Finals, won by the Los Angeles Lakers over the Boston Celtics, with 3,085 tweets per second at one stage on the site.
The NBA also ranks atop sport league popularity on Facebook and YouTube.
