Three-year-old filly Ruffina, donning the famous silks of sponsors Poonawallas, showed no mercy to her 13 rivals when she whizzed past them to sail away for a glorious victory in the Grade 1, Poonawalla Breeders' Multi-Million, the main attraction of yesterday's evening races held at the Mahalaxmi racetrack under the floodlights.
David Allan, the jockey who had won two back-to-back Derbies on this track with Hall Of Famer this year and Desert God (2016), won his first "juvenile Derby" as the coveted race is called.
Ruffina is owned by Dr Cyrus Poonawalla, his son Adar and daugher-in-law Natasha, along with Saleem Fazelbhoy, and Dinshaw and Munchi Shroff.
David Allan was unperturbed as he settled Ruffina in the rear section of the field initially, lying tenth in a field of 14. However, approaching the 600-metre marker, David quickly moved Ruffina to the outside, and before anyone could know what was happening, Ruffina accelerated with gigantic strides to whiz past all like a bullet, and further lengthened her stride to inflict such a crushing defeat on her rivals.
