Minor changes in full marathon route, but runners can expect similar terrain

There are slight tweaks in the full marathon route (42.2 km) for this Sunday, January 19, but, “basically we have similar roads, just different surroundings,” said Tata Mumbai Marathon (TMM) race director Hugh Jones at the technical meet and greet session on Wednesday, at the TMM 2025 Media Centre, Azad Maidan.  “Even as new roads and infrastructure emerge, the iconic challenges like the Peddar Road Hill remains,” said Jones. Dr Santosh Kumar Dora, cardiologist with the Asian Heart Institute (AHI) and Medical Director for the race, has run the half marathon 10 times. Dora said, “I am sad about missing running this time but excited about the new role.”  He spoke about aid stations and base camps, including 70 doctors of different specialities on the course that day, but most importantly highlighted, “we have a tie up with 15 hospitals en route.”  Homiyar Mistry of the Bombay City District Amateur Athletics Association (BCDAAA) said, “We have 100 technical officials at various points, ensuring fairness and integrity in the competition. Cheating such as short-cuts result in disqualification.”  Vivek Singh, Jt. MD, Procam International race promoters, highlighted, “There are 14,700 volunteers working behind the scenes for the delivery of one TMM. That’s truly phenomenal.”

'New blood is coming': Mensik after crushing No. 6 Ruud

Czech teenager Jakub Mensik sent three-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud tumbling out of the Australian Open on Wednesday and then warned: “New blood is coming.”  The Norwegian sixth seed had no answers to the power and intensity of the 19-year-old as he became the highest men’s seed to fall.  Mensik stormed home 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 for the biggest win of his fast-burgeoning career, with Ruud falling victim to another of tennis’s up-and-coming young brigade challenging the established order.  NextGen winner Joao Fonseca, 18, beat ninth seed Andrey Rublev on Tuesday. It is the first time that two teenagers have beaten top-10 players at a major since 2006, when Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray achieved the feat at Wimbledon.  A third teenager, American Learner Tien, 19, faces fifth seed Daniil Medvedev on Thursday. “It’s great that there is new blood always. We can see that tennis is moving on,” said Mensik, ranked 48.  “We can see different or new names in the tournaments. For the fans, for tennis, for everything, it’s really great. New blood is coming!” he added.  Fonseca was the youngest winner of the NextGen tournament since current world number one Jannik Sinner claimed the title, also aged 18, five years ago. ‘Blessed to make another record’: Djokovic

Novak Djokovic added yet another record to his lengthy list, breaking a tie with Roger Federer for the most Grand Slam matches played in tennis history by reaching 430 on Wednesday at the Australian Open in what was a tougher-than-expected second-round victory. Djokovic improved to 379-51 for his career at major tournaments, a .881 winning percentage, by defeating 21-year-old Portuguese qualifier Jaime Faria 6-1, 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-2 in a match briefly interrupted by light rain before Rod Laver Arena’s retractable roof was shut. “Grand Slams, of course, they are the pillars of our sport. They mean everything for the history of the sport. Definitely, the most important tournaments,” Djokovic said.  “I’m just blessed to be making another record, I guess, today,” he added. As it is, Djokovic has won the most Grand Slam singles titles of any man, 24, ahead of Rafael Nadal’s 22 and Federer’s 20. The 37-year-old Serb has spent more weeks at No. 1 in the rankings than any other player.  Carlos Alcaraz during his win over Yoshihito Nishioka yesterday  Alcaraz routs Nishioka Djokovic faces Czech 26th seed Tomas Machac next and is drawn to meet Spain’s Alcaraz in the last eight. Four-time Grand Slam winner Alcaraz dropped just five games in an ominous display to sprint into the third round. The third seed showed no mercy to Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in a 6-0, 6-1, 6-4 rout in 81 minutes.  Zverev through in three sets Second seed Zverev swept through with a straight-sets victory over Spain’s Pedro Martinez. No. 5 Zheng stunned by 97th-ranked Siegemund; Osaka rallies to advance

Distracted by a time penalty and unable to counteract No. 97-ranked Laura Siegemund’s aggressive approach, Zheng Qinwen’s loss in the second round Wednesday fell a long way short of last year’s run to the Australian Open final. Zheng lost the 2024 decider at Melbourne Park to Aryna Sabalenka and went on to win the Olympic gold medal in Paris. But her first tournament of the year ended in a 7-6 (3), 6-3 loss on John Cain Arena against 36-year-old Siegemund, who attacked from the first point. Meanwhile, Naomi Osaka, another two-time Australian Open champion, reached the third round of a major for the first time since 2022 when she weathered an early barrage from US Open semi-finalist Karolina Muchova before rallying to win 1-6, 6-1, 6-3. Aryna Sabalenka during her second-round win yesterday

Champ Sabalenka survives scare

Defending champion Aryna Sabalenka battled through serving woes Wednesday to make the Australian Open third round, admitting she was relieved to get a tricky match done in straight sets.  The World No. 1 dropped serve three times and faced 11 break points before overcoming Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro on Rod Laver Arena 6-3, 7-5, rattling off the last five games in a row.  It was a 16th consecutive victory on Melbourne’s centre court for Sabalenka, who is looking to win the first Grand Slam of the year for a third time in a row.  Next up is Denmark’s 42nd-ranked Clara Tauson. “She played incredible tennis today and it was a really tough one. I expected this tennis from her, I’m really glad I was able to win this match,” said Sabalenka.  “In the second set, honestly, I wasn’t rushing too much. After 5-2 I thought, ‘okay whatever, we’ll leave this set and move on.’ “But I was able to turn it around and super happy to win in straight sets,” she added.
