In his opening address, Upendrra Rai emphasized on the profound impact of Mahatma Gandhi's journalistic practices and his continued relevance in today’s rapidly evolving media landscape. Reflecting on Gandhi’s extraordinary commitment, Rai stated, "Gandhiji wrote 70,000 handwritten letters to people across the world, which speaks volumes about his dedication and passion for communication."
The conference brings together scholars, researchers, and Gandhian thinkers to explore how Gandhi's core principles of truth, non-violence, and ethical journalism can shape the future of media. Key discussions are focusing on Gandhi’s dedication to public service, accountability, and grassroots engagement in an era dominated by digital media.
CMD Rai noted that Gandhi’s journalistic legacy continues to captivate the public, citing the heightened engagement on his social media platforms following the announcement of the conference theme. "When I announced the topic, the engagement on my Instagram peaked among his 6 million followers, which reflects the lasting influence of Gandhiji," he shared.
During his speech, Upendrra Rai reflected on the transformation of Gandhi from Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to Mahatma Gandhi, emphasizing how his non-violent struggle for independence and unwavering principles earned him respect even from those who disagreed with his methods, such as revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh and Subhash Chandra Bose.
Rai also discussed the challenges Gandhi faced, stating, “Like Jesus Christ, Mahatma Gandhi faced criticism from various quarters. Yet, he earned deep respect from his critics, as seen in their writings and interactions with him.” He concluded with a powerful statement: “If Mahatma Gandhi and Lord Buddha were to walk the land of India again today, they would face resistance because new ideas always meet opposition.”
Further praising Gandhi’s integrity, CMD Upendrra Rai highlighted the honesty with which Gandhi documented his life in his autobiography, My Experiment with Truth. "Only someone of Gandhi’s integrity could narrate his personal transformation so candidly," he said.
In the context of modern media, Upendrra Rai discussed the growing influence of digital platforms, emphasizing their potential for societal change. He cited the May 2023 incident in Manipur, where a viral video on Facebook triggered nationwide outrage and led to parliamentary and judicial action as an example of how social media serves as a catalyst for accountability. He also mentioned Mahatma Gandhi’s belief, “Sanatan is the most liberal and forgiving religion in the world.”
Rai also addressed concerns over the decline in accountability within mainstream media. "Mainstream media is failing to fulfill its responsibility, but social media is bridging that gap," he remarked, underscoring the evolving role of digital media as a critical tool for societal change.
Reflecting on his own career in journalism, which spans over 28 years, Upendrra Rai encouraged the youth to study Gandhi’s life and learn from his journey. "If I have made any mistakes in my career, I apologize. Everything I have learned, I share openly," he said.
The ISGS conference continues until January 29, 2025, and promises to offer further valuable insights into the timeless relevance of Mahatma Gandhi’s principles in the modern media landscape.
