The toast of London design circles, Christopher Kane is here to put up a show at the ongoing lakme fashion week. In a freewheeling chat, he tells mid day why he's excited to have friend freida pinto sit in row 1, and the bollywood star he likes, although he has trouble remembering his name

Just for the record, most reports scattered across the Internet about Christopher Kane are false. "It is the journalist's imagination," smiles the British designer who is in the city to be part of today's event titled, Lakme Studio presents: Christopher Kane & Anthony Mascolo TIGI Catwalk show. The Glasgow-born London-based Christopher is a name to reckon with in design circles abroad, with Donatella Versace calling him someone who is "free, creative and strong, with a clear point of view even though he was so young".

He is young, alright. Just 27. But the list of assignments he has bagged -- most recently, a collaboration with the Versace Versus Line for a range of bags and shoes, another with London's stylish retail chain TopShop, and a tie-up with international haircare giant Toni & Guy -- make him more happening than some of his older contemporaries.

In person, he is refreshingly genial and soft-spoken as he greets you with a shake of a muslin-soft hand. He even looks different than he does in photographs plastered on the web. "I don't like being photographed," he complains, just as our photographer readies to click him. Dressed in all-black, his favourite, he can't stop talking about Mumbai's bright, sunny weather, actress Freida Pinto, and of course, Shah Rukh Khan.

The Slumdog Millionaire actress wore his black layered creation for an international awards function, and instantly struck a friendship with him. "She is coming for my show today! She is just starting her career and deserves to wear my creation," he says, excited. And that's rare because Christopher belongs to the fast-disappearing breed of high-profile designers who are particular about who they lend their clothes to. "I don't want to sound presumptuous but I've worked too hard for my stuff to be seen on front of the Sun newspaper.

Posh wanted to borrow something but I said no, so she went ahead and bought it," he was quoted as saying about ex-pop star, now WAG Victoria Beckham to UK's Telegraph.u00a0

India, Mumbai especially, isn't just another exotic destination on the world map. He confesses to being smitten by the vibrancy of the colours and textures he's seen around. He even slips out information about visiting factories around the city to source embroidery and fabric.

After a very dark Autumn/Winter 2009 show that was loaded with visually shocking images of the 1950s nuclear tests in Nevada, which he refers to as "gorgeous prints", Chistopher wanted to reconnect with lighter femininity, with a "clean, but full of colour and texture" collection. Tailored pieces from the A/W 2009 line, with gray, black and tartan cashmere creating mesmerising drama and transparency making a controlled appearance through skirts and dresses, will kickstart this evening's show. The "pretty yet perverted, innocent yet disturbing" Spring/Summer 2010 line will follow, marked by Gingham chiffon, puff sleeves, thigh-split dresses and fan pleating storming the runway.

Christopher admits to being curious about Bollywood stars, even while he struggles to remember the name of his favourite Hindi movie actor. "Shah Rukh uh... What's his name? Shah Rukh Khan. Yes. I think he's very handsome."
