Prasoon Joshi is in a musical mood

Though he's received much acclaim for his lyrics in films like Tare Zameen Par, Rang De Basanti and others, it is the first time that adfilmmaker Prasoon Joshi is basking in the glory of a beautiful composition. The song Kaun Si Dor from an upcoming film has been written and composed by Prasoon and is one of the touching songs in the film. CS gets the ad man talking about music:

Who: Prasoon Joshi
What: Talking about lyrics in the modern day
Where: At his office in Parel

Tuned in
Whenever I pen down words, I always compose for them too. I believe that all lyricists, maybe not all poets, have a good music sense. In Hollywood or British films it is the writer who composes the song and even, most of the times, sings it. It is only in Indian cinema that we have categories of lyricists, composers, singers, etc. People like Lynette Cohen, Bob Dylan were poets as well as singers. As for me, since childhood I've been composing songs and jingles. However, my first love is the pen; give me a pen and paper and I'm the happiest. But yes, both my parents are classical musicians and so there's an instinctive inclination towards music. Who knows, I'll probably come out with an album in the future!

By choice
However, I have to say that I'm missing some authentic sounds in our music today. Melody is taking a backseat and there's too much dependence on technology and short live music. I've been fortunate enough to have worked with talents like A R Rahman, and Shankar Ehsaan Loy. They work towards making authentic music, unlike many others who download and ensemble grooves from the Internet and create music. I believe that we're living in an era where we are catering too much to the choice of people. But that's not how it should work; music has to have your idea reflected in it. All that matters today is how big a hit a song is.

Tongue trap
Catering to a society revolving around consumerism may not always be great. I like using beautiful words as I believe in the sanctity of language. Experiments are always welcome, but there has to be a reason for doing them. You have to respect people's values and cultures, only then can you experiment with language. English lets many foreign words enter its vocabulary. But it sounds so funny if some says I want to have beetle nuts instead of paan-supari or a bowl of pulses instead of daal. It sounds stupid. One has to understand that there's a precision to every word and which you should accept as is.
