Ayushmann Khurrana’s films invariably have a fresh and distinct voice, a feature that he attributes to the new directors he collaborates with. This year, the actor is set to team up with another debutante director, Anubhuti Kashyap for Doctor G that sees him play a gynaecologist. With the social comedy slated to go on floors in April, Khurrana says he is eager to see how she brings forth a new story. “Anubhuti is a restless storyteller who has an extraordinary vision with this film. I hope we will be able to present something unique and immensely entertaining for the audience,” he says.

In his nine-year career, Khurrana has steadily thrown his weight behind first-time directors, choosing raw talent over refined eye, potential over prominent names. If he lent his face to Akshay Roy’s Meri Pyaari Bindu (2017), he also joined forces with Raaj Shaandilyaa and Hitesh Kewalya to give us Dream Girl (2019) and Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (2020).

Ask him what draws him to first-time filmmakers, and he says that they tend to be “massive risk-takers” — a trait that he respects and identifies with. “First-time or young filmmakers create high-risk content, which appeals to me. I have always gravitated towards being risky with my film choices. Without risks, nothing new or exciting can be created. We need to be bold in our approach because audiences, who are exposed to brilliant content from across the world, only want to watch new stories. Our industry needs more disruption, and these filmmakers are expressing their views bravely and freely through their cinema.”
