Oscar nominations: Naatu naatu in the final five

RRR movie

Nominations for the 95th Academy Awards were announced by Allison Williams and Riz Ahmed last evening. Three Indian films managed to get in the final five. Naatu naatu, which triumphed at the Golden Globes earlier this month, seems to be on a roll, MM Keeravani’s peppy composition from SS Rajamouli’s RRR, featuring Ram Charan and Junior NTR earned the nod in Best Original Song category. The other contenders are Applause (Tell It Like A Woman), Hold my hand (Top Gun: Maverick), Lift me up (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever) and This is a life (Everything Everywhere All At Once).

Shaunak Sen’s All That Breathes clinched the nomination in the Best Documentary Feature Film Category. Revolving around two brothers who have made it their lives’ mission to rescue and treat injured birds, especially the Black Kites, it has already won awards at the Sundance Film Festival and Cannes International Film Festival. It vies with All the Beauty and the Bloodshed, Fire of Love, A House Made of Splinters and Navalny for the top spot.

Kartiki Gonsalves’s The Elephant Whisperers made the cut in the Best Documentary Short Film category. It is based on a couple in south India who have devoted their lives to caring for an orphaned baby elephant named Raghu, forging a family like no other that tests the barrier between the human and the animal world. Haulout, How Do You Measure A Year?, The Martha Mitchell Effect and Stranger at the Gate are the other nominees in this category. Pan Nalin’s acclaimed Chhello Show (The Last Film Show) failed to earn the nod.

The absurdist sci-fi comedy drama, Everything Everywhere All At Once, scored the highest nominations, 11, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Anti-war film All Quiet on the Western Front, and the dark tragic comedy The Banshees of Inisherin tied with nine nods each. While Tom Cruise expectedly didn’t make it in the final five of the Best Actor category, Top Gun: Maverick earned him a nod as a producer. The Top Gun sequel tied with Todd Field’s Tár with six nominations. The psychological drama also earned Cate Blanchett her sixth Oscar nod. She has previously won Best Actress honours for Blue Jasmine, and Best Supporting Actress for The Aviator. James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water earned only four nods, including Best Picture.
