As someone who never did well in geography, this writer held little care or concern for maps. Yet, there is something aesthetically pleasant about the geometric sharpness and detailing of city maps. A growing trend sees people opting for their favourite cities of travel, memories or home, as murals or wall décor. A digital platform, bestofbharat.com, offers people a chance to experience the visuals of Mumbai’s patterns on their walls.

The idea began as a European and American trend, Shivam Goswami, marketing head for the website, tells us. “People want to capture their roots and familiar spaces through these artworks. It also displays their identity or memories. It has only now caught on with India in the last couple of years,” he notes. This makes them ideal choices for wall art and murals for a younger generation that is constantly on the move. They can be either aspiration — maps of cities they wish to move to — or nostalgic remnants of their home towns. “There are a lot of Mumbai-based artists, too. Some of the murals and pencil art capture the many facets of Mumbai. These include the iconic elements like the dabbawalas, the black-and-yellow-taxis and the skyline,” Goswami says, adding that the city brings out interesting and artistic perspectives.

The website offers access to over 3,000 maps, including cities such as Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata and relatively lesser-known Nanded. Maps of world cities like Los Angeles and Osaka are also available. The writer was particularly impressed at the sight of Navi Mumbai and Thane finding their space against the crowded veins of Mumbai. Whatever be your reason for it piquing your interest, this makes for impressive reminders of the city’s arterial structure.
