One person was injured after two yet to be identified persons on Friday morning fired several rounds in Sanpada area of Navi Mumbai in Maharashtra and later fled the crime scene, the police said, adding that a probe into the matter was underway.

The duo were on a motorcycle and shot several rounds before fleeing, said an official.

According to the Sanpada police officials, the incident occurred on Friday at around 9:30 am. The two bike-borne assailants opened fire at least five to six rounds before fleeing the scene. Locals, and eyewitnesses reported the matter to the police who reached at the spot to conduct investigation.

The injured person was rushed to a nearby hospital following the incident.

Navi Mumbai Police officials identified the victim as 48-year-old Rajaram Thoke, a garbage contractor at the Agricultural Produce Market Committee (APMC).

According to officials, moments before the incident, Thoke was seated inside his car, parked near a roadside tea stall, sipping tea when shots were fired. Within a span of 18 to 23 seconds, five rounds were fired allegedly at him by unidentified assailants.

Four of the bullets struck Thoke, causing injuries to his abdomen, shoulder, and leg. He is currently in critical condition and undergoing treatment at a private hospital, police said.

Sources said that the police suspect the firing may be linked to his contract with NMMC related to garbage collection and disposal.

DCP Amit Kale, of Navi Mumbai Crime Branch said the injured person's condition is stable, while the search for the two assailants is underway.

“We are reviewing the CCTV footage from the vicinity to identify the assailants. The motive is still unclear. The investigation is on,” said a senior police official from Navi Mumbai police.

Further details will be updated.
