Navi Mumbai Police has registered a case against a man for allegedly raping a 33-year-old woman on the pretext of providing her with financial help, police said.

The official from Panvel Police station told PTI that based on the woman's complaint, they filed a case under Section 376 (rape) and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code against the accused, aged 53. The official said that the accused has not been arrested yet.

Reportedly, the woman told Navi Mumbai police that the accused called her to his home in Mankhurd in neighbouring Mumbai in the guise of providing her financial help and raped her.

5 arrested for kidnapping, attempted extortion in Thane district

Meanwhile, in another unrelated incident, five members of a gang have been arrested for allegedly kidnapping and attempting to extort money from a 60-year-old estate agent and his friend in Maharashtra's Thane district.

According to senior inspector Rahulkumar Patil of Kashigaon police station, four women and one male were arrested after filing a complaint under sections 364A (kidnapping for ransom), 384 (extortion), and other relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code, stated another PTI report.

According to the report, the incident began when the complainant received a call from a woman looking for work. He and his friend were instructed to meet at a hotel on May 21. While discussing career opportunities, the accused began recording a video of the complainant and his buddy.

Sensing something was awry, the two guys attempted to flee but were dragged into a waiting autorickshaw and driven to Gorai, where three women and a man attacked them, the report added.

The gang demanded money and led the victims to an ATM, where they were unable to withdraw cash. The men were transported to Borivali, where the accused threatened not to release them until they paid Rs 1 lakh. The gang reportedly threatened to file fake rape allegations and spread the recordings on social media. The victims were discharged in the early hours of May 22.

The police detained Sonali Mahendra Mahale (28), Nisha Nagesh Gaikwad (45), her daughter Darshana (22), sister Deepa Rohit Prajapati (38), and Mallik Ahmed Fakki (24) using CCTV video and information, the report added.
