The 25 Sainiks led by ex-corporator Tukaram Kate were protesting shortage of BMC-supplied potable water in Panjrapol and Chembur.

BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner RA Rajeev said, "We are writing to the police commissioner to provide police security to our hydraulic engineers, especially those who work from ward offices, and for employees who operate the water valves in the city's neighbourhoods.

A senior official from the hydraulic department said, "The water situation will only get worse in the six months leading to the next monsoon. Using water cautiously is the only option."

The BMC is not increasing the security at Gondalia's office, but a case of unlawful assembly, rioting and damages has been registered against the attackers at Azad Maidan police station.

"An FIR has been lodged against those responsible for the attacks," said Rajeev.
