Metro rail may encounter sharp turn at Charkop; worried officials rethink plan
It's always advisable to avoid dangerous curves, in life and especially on the roads, for the sheer danger that accompanies them. And the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Development Authority (MMRDA) is doing just that.
The MMRDA is pondering over ways to avoid a possible steep curvy turn that the second metro rail on the Charkop-Bandra-Mankhurd route could encounter at Charkop.
After the original plan for setting up a car shed at Charkop was opposed by residents, the MMRDA has proposed an alternative site on a rectangular 20-hectare land space.
However, this will result in a steep turn for the metro car having a radius of 100 metres with a 2.5 per cent decline into the car shed.
As the metro rail cannot go beyond a speed of 15-18 kmh, the decline will cause a roller-coaster ride effect at Charkop.
G R Madan, director (CBM metro rail), MMRDA said, "This is just a suggestion. We wouldn't compromise on passenger safety."
According to the original plan, the metro car was supposed to go straight in to the car shed without any declines.
'Stop work please'
Last week, the MMRDA and state government heard the plea of 1,900 people who will be affected by the second metro rail line at Charkop. They presented their objections and suggestions and asked the MMRDA to shift the metro car shed from Charkop to another place between Kandivli and Dahisar.
