Hyderabad: Man kills wife, boils body parts in pressure cooker

In a spine-chilling case, an ex-serviceman murdered his 35-year-old wife, cut her body into pieces and boiled them in a pressure cooker.  The heinous crime came to light at Meerpet in Rangareddy district on the outskirts of Hyderabad on Wednesday. According to police, Guru Murthy had lodged a complaint with Meerpet Police Station under Rachakonda Police Commisisonerate on January 18 that his wife Venkata Madhavi was missing. Police had registered a case and took up investigation. During the probe, police came to know that for last few days the husband and wife were having frequent quarrels between them. The investigating officials questioned Guru Murthy, who confessed to the ghastly crime and revealed shocking details. The accused told police that he murdered his wife, cut the body into pieces and boiled them in a pressure cooker. Later, he dumped the boiled body parts into a lake in Jillelaguda. Police recorded his statement and began collecting evidence. The search was on for the victim's body parts in the lake. Guru Murthy had served in Army and after taking retirement, he was working as a security guard at DRDO in Kanchan Bagh on outsourcing basis. He married Madhavi about 13 years ago. They have two children. After killing his wife, the accused approached Meerpet Police Station along with her parents so that no one suspect him. Police said an investigation was on into the case and they would soon reveal all details. In a similar case in Mumbai in 2023, a 32-year-old woman was murdered by her 56-year-old live-in partner. The accused had cut the corpse into pieces with a tree cutter, boiled the pieces in a pressure cooker to ensure there was no foul smell and then filled them in plastic bags to dispose them off. Two earthquakes rock Manipur districts, no casualties reported

Two successive earthquakes, measuring 4.3 and 3.3 on the Richter scale, jolted southern Manipur’s mountainous Churachandpur and Pherzawl districts and adjoining areas on Wednesday night, officials said. Officials said that a moderate-intensity earthquake, measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale, jolted southern Manipur’s Pherzawl district and adjoining areas on Wednesday night. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) data, the tremor struck at a depth of 40 km from the surface. Within 49 minutes from the first tremor, another quake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale, hit Churachandpur district and adjoining areas at around 9.46 p.m. The second shake struck at a depth of 30 km from the surface, the NCS data said.  According to Disaster Management Officials, there has been no immediate report of loss of life or damage to property in the two consecutive quakes. Pherzawl district shares a border with Mizoram and Assam while Churachandpur district has borders with Mizoram and Myanmar. Wednesday's tremor occurred in Manipur after six separate quakes in Manipur and seven shakes in northeastern states this month.  Quake hit Churachandpur district (3.1 on the Richter scale) on January 2 and in the same day the tremor (3.8) struck in Tamenglong district, on January 5 in Kamjong district (3.1), on January 7 in Kangpokpi district (3.6) on January 13 in the same Kangpokpi district (3.3), on January 17 in Tamenglong district (3.3) and on January 21 in Meghalaya’s South West Khasi Hills district (4.1 on the Richter scale).  According to NCS data, more than one quake every week hit a northeastern state with most tremors measuring 3 to 4 on the Richter scale. Successive earthquakes, mostly mild to moderate, in the mountainous northeastern states, especially in Assam, Mizoram, and Manipur, have kept the authorities worried, forcing public and private builders to build quake-proof structures. Seismologists consider the mountainous northeastern region as the sixth most earthquake-prone belt in the world. In 1950, an earthquake measuring 8.7 on the Richter scale altered the course of the mighty Brahmaputra river, which passes by the congested Guwahati city, the northeastern region's main commercial hub.  Another earthquake of magnitude 6.5 on the Richter scale hit northeastern India in 1988, killing over 200 people in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.  In 2011, an earthquake of magnitude 6.9 shook Sikkim and parts of West Bengal killing over 100 people.  Another quake in 2017, with a magnitude 5.7, struck 20 km northeast of Ambassa in Tripura’s Dhalai district. Disaster Management authorities are regularly conducting awareness campaigns about the frequent quakes in the northeastern states.  This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Delhi riots case: No bail for Tahir Hussain as SC gives split verdict

Former councillor and February 2020 Delhi riots accused Tahir Hussain on Wednesday failed to secure an interim bail to campaign for Delhi Assembly polls after a Supreme Court bench gave a split verdict. While Justice Pankaj Mithal dismissed Hussain's plea saying no case was made out, Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah opined he could be released on interim bail. Justice Mithal said allowing interim bail could open a Pandora's box as every undertrial would invoke the same ground.  Acknowledging the allegations against Hussain were grave and serious, Justice Amanullah said they were only allegations at the present moment. JD(U) Manipur chief sacked over no support to BJP remark

The JD(U) on Wednesday sacked its Manipur unit president, Ksh. Biren Singh, in an effort to quell growing speculation about its ties with the BJP. Party’s national spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan said Singh’s removal was due to indiscipline and asserted that the party would continue to support the BJP-led government in the northeastern state. Ranjan affirmed that the JD(U) remains committed to supporting the BJP-led NDA, not just in Manipur but across the country. “Our party has worked diligently to strengthen the NDA and will continue to do so,” he added. Ranjan’s remark came shorty after Ksh Biren Singh claimed that the party had withdrawn support to the BJP-led Biren Singh government and informed its decision to governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla. The state unit chief had also claimed that the lone JDU MLA in the state, Md Abdul Nasir, will sit in the opposition benches. This story has been sourced from a third party syndicated feed, agencies. Kolkata rape-murder case: CBI to move HC seeking death penalty for Sanjoy Roy

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will file an appeal before the Calcutta High Court (HC), seeking death sentence for Sanjoy Roy, who was sentenced to "life imprisonment until death" by a Sealdah court in the Kolkata rape-murder case, officials said Wednesday, two days after the judgment. According to news agency PTI, CBI received a legal advice suggesting that the case may be categorised as the "rarest of rare", deserving capital punishment, they said. The central probe agency is likely to file an appeal against the Sealdah court order as soon as possible with detailed arguments in favour of capital punishment, PTI reported. The agency's plea seeking death penalty for Roy was turned down by the trial court, where Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das said that the crime did not fall under the "rarest of the rare" category. "The CBI prayed for the death penalty. The defence lawyer prayed that a jail term be given instead of the death penalty. This crime does not fall under the 'rarest of the rare' category," Judge Das said while sentencing Roy. "I am sentencing you to life imprisonment, meaning till the last day of your life, for causing injury during the act of committing rape on the victim that led to her death...," he told Roy. The West Bengal government has already approached HC, challenging the verdict and seeking death penalty for Roy. The CBI has opposed the state's right to file an appeal in the case, claiming that as it was the prosecuting agency, it had the right to appeal on the grounds of inadequacy of the sentence, PTI reported. Deputy Solicitor General Rajdeep Majumdar, appearing for CBI, on Wednesday opposed the state's submission, maintaining that the West Bengal government does not have the right to appeal against the trial court's order on the ground of inadequacy. He submitted that the central agency had prayed for awarding capital punishment to Roy before the trial court. HC said it would hear the CBI, the victim's family and the convict before deciding on the admission of the state government's appeal. The court further stated that it will hear the matter on January 27. The 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and killed in the early hours of August 9 in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata when she was taking a rest during her graveyard shift. Her body with severe injury marks was found inside the hall by a doctor next morning. Roy, a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police, was arrested the next day based on CCTV footage in which he was seen entering the seminar hall at 4.03 am on the day of the incident. On August 13, the Calcutta HC transferred the probe in the Kolkata rape-murder case from the police to the CBI. The central probe agency took over the case the next day. (With PTI inputs)

Delhi polls 2025: PM Modi slams AAP, says liquor is available but not water

Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi on Wednesday urged Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members to target winning over 50 per cent booths in the assembly polls, and said people are openly expressing anger with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government and are reminding it of its promises, news agency PTI reported. PM Modi, in an online interaction with Delhi BJP members, said AAP, which he called "aapda (disaster)," has been exposed. The aapda is making new announcements everyday as it is daily receiving information of losing ground in various parts of Delhi, he said. PM Modi accused AAP of conspiring to push people from 'purvanchal' out of the national capital, alleging that the party is full of hate for them. He added that AAP engaged in lies and deceit while the Congress has betrayed people massively in the past 25 years. Those born in the past 25 years or are in the 35-40 years group have seen nothing but distraction, he said, adding they have lost hope and are in despair. According to PTI, PM Modi also said that defeating the Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP would pave the way for fulfilling the resolve of making Delhi the developed capital of a developed India. 'Liquor is available but water is not' Criticising AAP for failing to provide basic needs such as water to people, PM Modi said "liquor is available but water is not", while interacting with a BJP member. PM Modi said BJP will run a massive campaign to ensure that drinking water reaches everyone once it is elected to power here, PTI stated. "The 'aapda' did not fulfil any of its responsibility," he said, asking BJP members to carry videos and pictures of poor roads, drainage conditions and garbage, among other problems people are facing, to "expose" AAP. He also stated that the Delhi government was responsible for a rise in people's electricity bills. Slamming Kejriwal, he said that the "Sheeshmahal" is a live example of the AAP's deceit and lies. The BJP had dubbed Kejriwal's official residence as Sheeshmahal, claiming he spent crores on the house, PTI stated. PM Modi also urged BJP members to ensure record polling in the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025. 'AAP failed to fulfil its promise' Without naming Kejriwal, he said the former CM had failed to clean the Yamuna river as he believes that cleaning the Yamuna does not get votes. The prime minister said AAP also failed to fulfil its promise of building houses for the poor, and noted that the Centre has built thousands of homes for them. He further alleged said that AAP only makes fake announcements and promised that the BJP will improve the condition of government schools in the national capital. The BJP will record a massive victory in the Delhi Assembly Elections 2025 on the strength of its booth workers, he said, asserting that people, especially women, are leading its campaign. Slamming Congress, PM Modi said the party often made false promises but the AAP has very much surpassed the main opposition party in doing so. BJP demands explanation over delay in CAG report by Delhi govt, WATCH: He said the BJP's model is based on truth and its state governments in Haryana, Maharashtra and Odisha, among others, have fulfilled its promises, including releasing cash assistance to women. It took over seven decades for various ills to grow in the Congress, but the AAP matched it in seven months and has surpassed it in the next nine years, he added, reported PTI. Highlighting BJP's commitment to the middle class and improving ease of living, the prime minister said the central government has spent a significant amount of money for this, including by building Metro and highways. To ensure the middle class enjoy a comfortable standard of living, the government spends significant amounts of money. "We have responded to the aspirations of the middle class in Delhi," he added. The prime minister also noted that lakhs of families in Delhi are with central government employees and pensioners, and asserted that the 8th pay commission will change their fate, reported PTI. HC to hear West Bengal Govt's appeal for death penalty for Sanjoy Roy on Jan 27

The West Bengal government has appealed to the Calcutta High Court's (HC) Division Bench against the trial court's life imprisonment verdict handed over to Sanjay Roy in the Kolkata rape-murder case. The next hearing in the case is scheduled on January 27, ANI reported. As per ANI, Advocate General Kishore Dutta has approached the division bench of Justice Debangshu Basak, seeking the death penalty for Roy. The matter has been allowed to be registered. The Sealdah Civil and Criminal Court on Monday announced life imprisonment till death for Roy in the Kolkata rape-murder case. Along with this, the court also imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on him. Following the court's verdict, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed dissatisfaction and said that if the case had been with the Kolkata Police, they would have ensured a death penalty, ANI reported. "I learned about the sentencing from the media. We have always demanded capital punishment and we continue to stand by it. However, this is the court's decision and I can't say much about this. For three other cases, Kolkata police ensured capital punishment through thorough investigations concluded within 54-60 days. This was a serious case. Had it been under our purview, we would have ensured the death penalty long back," CM Mamata said while addressing the media at Malda. The father of the doctor, who was a postgraduate trainee at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital, on Monday rejected the Rs 17-lakh compensation by the state and said that he will move to a higher court seeking death penalty for Roy. Speaking to ANI, the victim's father said, "What the court thinks as a good judgment based on the evidence produced by the CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation), the court has given that verdict. We have a lot of questions on the investigation done by the CBI. We did not go to the court for compensation. We want justice, not compensation. Kolkata police did wrong and the CBI will have to do something. The Kolkata police have given us more pain than the passing away of my daughter." (With ANI inputs)
