Dr Satyasheel Naik (60), a quintessential Punekar, is a man for all seasons. A doctor by profession, he pursues a variety of interests despite his busy schedule. Naik's family has been in Pune for the last 250 years. "I belong to a heritage family.u00a0 My great, great grandfather Nandaram Naik, a builder, was involved in the creation of many landmarks in the city like the Synagogue, Bund Garden Bridge, Alandi mandir, Naikwada in Shukrawar Peth, Punlik Mandir of Pandharpur on the banks of the Chandrabhaga river," Naik said.

Early years
"My schooling was in St Vincent's after, which I went to Fergusson College, and then to BJ Medical College.u00a0 I worked initially at Sancheti Hospital before pursuing my masters degree in surgery. I started my own hospital in 1979, and have been practicing for 30 years now," Naik added.

Naik's bungalow on Stavely Road, Camp, is full of greenery, because the good doctor pursues gardening as a hobby. His garden boasts of over 500 species, including a variety of creepers and exotic plants.

His bungalow is in the British colonial style.

It has porches, huge halls, tiled roofs and has antiques and paintings scattered all over the property, which gives Naik's house a museum like feel.u00a0

"I also find time for photography and I often go on long drives to photograph birds and have a fascination for cars," Naik said.

Wild at heart
Among other cars parked at the bungalow, were a Mercedes and a Land Cruiser. "Nothing pleases me more than driving off into the wild in my Land Cruiser to my farm at Panshet, Andalgaon on Sholapur Road, " said Naik.

Hobbies, Naik says, help him relieve the stress his job brings him. He loves Pune with all his heart.

"Pune is entrenched in my heart. Wherever I go, I want to return home, to my own house. There's a magnetism that binds me to Pune," he said.
