"They starved my daughter for three days and then killed her. In her statement to the police, she has revealed the names of her in-laws who set her on fire. Some months ago, she had told us she was being beaten mercilessly. We even called the Police Control Room to complain about the beatings. At that time, the police official who came to our help told us to settle the matter and that he would take care of my daughter's safety.
But what kind of safety is this? I lost my daughter," said Mohammed Shamsher, father of the victim.u00a0
The police have arrested Afsana's husband and his brother Mohammed Zakir in connection with the case.
Rashid owns a government-approved ration shop and also runs a bakery owned by his father. Afsana is survived by two children, one aged two years and the other one year.
"There were around seven people who first gagged her and then burnt her. Even the neighbours have told the police she was set on fire," said Shamsher.
