Sweet victory for Worli resident after BMC demolishes illegal garbage collection shed in his building following a 13-year struggle
Rajiv Jain, a resident of Venus Cooperative Housing Society, Worli, heaved a sigh of relief on Wednesday after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) finally demolished an illegal garbage collection shed at his building. Jain had been striving for 13 years to get the shed demolished by the municipal body as reported in MiD DAY’s August 3 edition.

The BMC had issued a notice to the building authorities on July 30 asking them to demolish the illegal garbage shed immediately. It had also mentioned categorically that if they failed to do so, the civic body would carry out the demolition but the residents would have to incur the cost.
A BMC engineer said, “After bringing down the structure, we will send a total estimated expense to the society and recover the cost from them.”
However, Jain claims the garbage is still being collected at the same place. “Residents continue to throw garbage at the same spot. I have written a letter to the society asking them to stop it,” said Jain.
Building authorities constructed the unauthorised shed in 1997-98, close to where Jain lived, after the society’s garbage collection system, entailing the use of pipes, was discontinued.u00a0
