Claims SSC which rejected candidates having degrees from the institute

The students of School of Open Learning (SOL), Delhi University, are not eligible to sit for examinations conducted by the Staff Selection Commission (SSC).

The SSC claims that the institution is not recognised by the Distance Education Council and thus the fate of over 100 students who got selected for various posts through SSC is hanging in balance.

According to a notification issued in 1995 by the HRD ministry, all the qualifications awarded through distance education by the universities established by an act of parliament or state legislature, institutions deemed to be universities under section 3 of the UGC Act 1956 and institutions of national importance declared under an act of parliament stand automatically recognized for the purpose of employment to posts or services under the central government, provided it has been approved by DEC.

Six section officers, 48 tax assistant and hundreds of other students of SOL were selected under various examinations conducted by the SSC. However, they haven't get their appointment letters yet.

Dhruv, an SOL student who got 188 rank in the exam and was selected as a section officer (audit) said, "Our career is at stake now. We are not given the appointment letters yet. Because of the differences between the SSC, SOL and DEC, the students who have been selected are suffering."

Professor Manjulika Srivastava, Director, DEC said, "We are ready to give recognition to the university but that would happen only when they approach us. Till now we have not received any such request from the varsity." The School of Open Learning (SOL) has a different story to tell.u00a0 Prof. H C Pokhriyal, Executive Director, SOL said, "DU is a central university and we don't think it is really necessary to get our distance learning degrees recognized by the DEC. However, we have got our own legal cell which will take care of this issue."

The selection panel has even started cancelling candidature of students who have failed to submit required certificates from the university regarding recognition of school of open learning from DEC within a stipulated time period.

Deepak Kumar Jaiswal, who cleared tax assistant examination, is worried for his future, as he has been issued a letter by the SSC stating that his candidature for the examination has been cancelled as he failed to prove validity of his degree.
