Quite a few of India's icons may not vote this time as they will be abroad, playing or watching IPL matches. Some feel guilty, while others believe playing is still a national duty

Cricketers in this election year are voting in favour of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Some are giving the elections a miss with a hint of guilt, but others say they are playing for the country anywayu2026 MiD DAY gets some players and organisers talking.

K Srikkanth: Making way for Gen Next
Kris Srikkanth, brand ambassador for the Chennai Superkings, says:u00a0 "Though it's unfortunate that we will be missing the elections and all its hungama, I guess we've made way for the younger generation to vote. This time, a lot of youth groups have come forward to raise awareness. But I do feel guilty for not exercising my basic right."

Virat Kohli: Work more important
Virat, another RCB player, says: "There's so much happening at the moment that I completely forgot about the elections. I voted last year but can't help it this time. Work is more important."

S Sreesanth: Doing it for the country
Sreesanth, who plays for the Mohali team, believes that choosing the IPL over elections is still service to the country.
"In a way, whatever we are doing is for the country. The sponsors and organisers will lose much if we miss or reschedule our matches again. Indirectly, we are doing something good for our country," he told MiD DAY.

Ramya: Can fly down
The actress and team Bangalore's brand ambassador says: "With elections being hyped up, I really wanted to vote this time around. It all depends on the schedule. If there's no match at that time, I'll definitely fly down to Bangalore to vote."

Vinay Kumar: Feeling guilty
Vinay, who is part of Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), had registered for the Jaago Re campaign and was all set to vote, butu00a0.... "It's really unfortunate that I won't get to vote this time. I really feel guilty. I had registered but never thought the dates would clash."
